Awarded by the Government of Canada, Canada Research Chair positions are designed to reinforce academic research and training excellence with a view to improving depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthening Canada’s international competitiveness and helping to train the next generation of highly skilled people.

“The UUֱ�� would like to congratulate all the faculty members who have been appointed Canada Research Chairs or had their positions renewed,” said Leah Cowen, UUֱ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “From reproductive mental health to the economics of infectious disease and theoretical particle physics, these researchers are advancing knowledge and innovation in important fields.”

Steven Narod, a senior scientist at Women’s College Research Institute and professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Temerty Faculty of medicine at the UUֱ��, has been awarded the 2023 McLaughlin Medal by the Royal Society of Canada.

The award recognizes important research of sustained excellence in any branch of medical sciences.

Narod, a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Breast Cancer, is renowned for his research on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, that when mutated, substantially increase a woman’s lifetime risk of breast or ovarian cancer. His current research focuses on the efficacy of treatment options for women with BRCA1 mutations and breast cancer.

Narod’s research into hereditary breast cancer began at the International Agency in Research in Cancer in Lyon, France, in 1987 and continued upon his return to Canada in 1990, first at McGill University and then, starting in 1995, at UUֱ��. Narod is credited as a co-discoverer of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and has studied the distribution of mutations worldwide since their discoveries. He says that one of his earliest proud moments was his major paper linking hereditary breast cancer susceptibility to hereditary ovarian cancer susceptibility.

“It’s nice to know that the work is really having impact,” he says, adding he’s motivated by the community of researchers and his drive to find answers. “I enjoy working with my students and my fellows. I enjoy being part of an active community here at the UUֱ��. I like hearing the work that others do and seeing the success of younger colleagues.

“The ultimate goal is I’d like to see an effective treatment for hereditary breast cancer.”

Renowned breast cancer researcher Kelly Metcalfe has received the Order of Merit for Nursing Research from the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) in recognition of her significant impact on the nursing profession and practice.

A professor and associate dean, research and external relations, at the UUֱ��’s Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, Metcalfe is also a senior scientist at Women’s College Hospital Research Institute. She was honoured for her significant contributions to breast cancer research, specifically the prevention and treatment of hereditary breast cancers associated with BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutations.

“It is an honour to receive this award alongside my fellow nursing colleagues,” says Metcalfe. “It recognizes not only the importance of breast cancer research, but also the unique role of nurse scientists, and brings greater awareness to the calibre of nursing research in Canada.”

Metcalfe’s current research is focused on assessing an alternate model of care called Direct Rapid Genetic Testing (DRGT) for Canadians at high risk of having a BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation.
