Khalil Al-Wazir, a PhD candidate in the department of political science in UUֱ��’s Faculty of Arts & Science, has been named a Schwarzman Scholar, joining a select group of outstanding scholars at a one-year, fully-funded master’s degree program in global affairs at Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

The prestigious graduate fellowship is awarded annually to scholars with exemplary leadership and the ability to bridge and understand political and cultural differences.

An aspiring diplomat, Al-Wazir’s accomplishments include authoring a book, Centrist Reflections on Political Philosophy, contributing to two United Nations secretary-general reports and being awarded the UN Department for Safety and Security Under-Secretary-General’s Excellence Award.

Al-Wazir is currently working with UUֱ��’s Postcor (Post-Conflict Reintegration) Lab to organize a workshop, in collaboration with the United States Institute of Peace, focused on engaging non-state armed groups in peace processes.

"Joining the Schwarzman Scholars is a unique opportunity that I do not take lightly,” Al-Wazir said. "It is, to my knowledge, the only scholarship with a diplomatic mission focused on bridging the differences between the two great powers, which is increasingly a necessary condition for resolving the most intractable conflicts of our day.

“I am heading into this program with open eyes and ears, ready to engage with fellow leaders on the world's most pressing challenges in a shared commitment to peace, progress and prosperity."

Rotman Commerce alumna Khadija Waseem has been named a Schwarzman Scholar and will join a select cohort of outstanding students from around the world for a one-year, fully funded, master’s program at Tsinghua University in Beijing this year.

Waseem, who graduated in 2021 with a bachelor of commerce degree in a management specialization, served as a teaching assistant for three courses, participated in a Summer Abroad program with Associate Professor Michael Khan, and completed an independent research course with Jan Klakura. She also founded Accessibility at Rotman Commerce (ARC), the first peer-led centralized navigation program for students outside the classroom. She describes becoming a Schwarzman Scholar as “an adventure that will allow me to pursue my passion for global affairs alongside a diverse group of brilliant individuals.”

At Tsinghua University, Waseem hopes to pursue her passion for exploring the role of digital governance in creating a more democratic and equitable society. “As technology rapidly advances, it is important to engage policymakers and digital partners for a cohesive dialogue and strategy,” she says. “These two dimensions cannot afford to work in silos, or humans will face the negative repercussions of weak digital infrastructure for generations.

“I want to build the digital governance infrastructures of tomorrow, today.”

UUֱ�� Mississauga alumna Habon Ali is one of 150 scholars accepted into the prestigious and competitive Schwarzman Scholars program.

The scholarship will allow Ali to earn a master’s degree in global affairs from Tsinghua University in Beijing. The former UUֱ�� Mississauga valedictorian plans to focus her studies on global health inequality and further strengthen her leadership skills.

Ali was selected from a pool of 3,000 applicants after her mentor at UUֱ��, physician and global health professional Peter Singer, recommended that she apply.

“I have a really strong interest in global health, global health equity, and reducing health inequities on a national level here in Canada – but also between countries,” she says. “I feel like Canada is a microcosm of the world, and we have a responsibility to our communities, but also on a global stage.”

Ali says the program will also help her understand China’s role in the world and is looking forward to the opportunity to learn with Asian and African scholars.

“It’s a chance to learn with scholars around the world, which I think is so valuable in and of itself,” she says.
