The UUֱ�� has recognized 49 faculty members across its three campuses with Connaught New Researcher Awards.

The annual award supports early-stage researchers in the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and other fields – and aims to enhance their competitiveness for external awards.

"This funding supports our talented early-career researchers as they establish themselves in their respective academic fields,” said Professor Leah Cowen, UUֱ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

"I am excited to see their work on an array of important and complex issues such as gender discrimination in the technology industry, capacity-building in community-based health care and social services, and engineering of anaerobic bacteria for sustainable fuel production."

Other topics being investigated by this year's recipients range from road safety in Toronto and improving access to HIV/AIDS services for racialized populations, to the role of volunteers in aiding Afghan evacuees and understanding how planets form.

The Connaught New Researcher Award is part of the Connaught Fund, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. As Canada’s largest internal university research funding program, the Connaught Fund has given out more than $183 million to researchers across myriad disciplines to tackle pressing global issues.

The UUֱ�� has recognized 51 faculty members across its three campuses with Connaught New Researcher Awards.

The annual award supports researchers in the early stages of their careers in humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences and engineering and is designed to increase their competitiveness for external awards. Questions investigated by this year’s recipients range from the microscopic “How can we improve our cellular therapies?” to the macroscopic “What is the nature of Dark Matter?”.

“Early-career researchers face many challenges as they carve out their places in their respective fields. This funding will help alleviate many of these burdens and springboard their research,” said Professor Leah Cowen, UUֱ��’s vice president of research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“I’m looking forward to seeing their work on a wide range of important issues such as the impact of sustainability on firms’ supply chain reporting, the experiences of Black and Indigenous women school administrators, and environmental exposure to contaminants during pregnancy.”

The Connaught New Researcher Award is part of the Connaught Fund, which celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. As Canada’s largest internal university research funding program, the Connaught Fund has given out more than $178.7 million to researchers across myriad disciplines to tackle pressing global issues.

The UUֱ�� has recognized 53 faculty members across the three campuses with the Connaught New Researcher Award.

“I am elated to receive this award and recognition for my work,” said Kyle Ganson of the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, who is investigating the phenomenon known as bio-hacking. “My hope is that these findings will help promote the health and well-being of young people by ensuring that assessment and treatment protocols are informed and resources are allocated appropriately.”

Designed to help winners establish a strong research program and increase their competitiveness for external funding, the award is supported by the Connaught Fund and is part of UUֱ��’s commitment to fostering excellence in research and innovation by supporting faculty members who are in the early stages of their academic careers.

“These researchers are doing important and innovative work across the humanities, life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and social sciences,” said Professor Leah Cowen, UUֱ��’s associate vice-president, research. “Kaja Jasinska’s research will help us understand the impact of interrupted schooling on the development neural systems for reading of resettled refugee children. Kevin White’s work on decolonizing Haudenosaunee oral history will develop collaborative research methods with Six Nations of the Grand River – and Yun William Yu will develop new mathematical algorithms and computer software for analyzing genome sequences.

“They – along with 50 other faculty members across the university – will create knowledge that has a significant impact on people’s lives, thanks to the support of the Connaught Fund.”
