3M Teaching Fellowship

The UUֱ�� Mississauga's Ken Derry has received a 2023 3M National Teaching Fellowship Award from the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Derry, an associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of historical studies, has been teaching history of religion courses at UUֱ�� since his days as a graduate student. He joined UUֱ�� Mississauga in 2010.

The 3M National Teaching Fellowship Awards honour 10 exceptional teachers in post-secondary education each year. Fiona Rawle, a professor of biology at UUֱ�� Mississauga, received the fellowship award in 2022.

The announcement, published in Maclean’s magazine, notes that Derry recognizes “that learning moves in multiple ways” and “has developed extensive pedagogical innovations, especially with respect to problem-based learning, learning through failure, and deliberate construction of inclusive learning spaces.”

In 2022, Derry won UUֱ��’s highest teaching honour: a President’s Teaching Award.

UUֱ�� Mississauga historical studies professor Martin Revermann has received the 2022 Humboldt Research Prize, which recognizes outstanding senior researchers whose work has a significant impact in their field.

Revermann, a former University of Oxford Rhodes Scholar who also received the 2021 Desmond Morton Research Excellence Award, specializes in performance criticism and the cultural history of Greek drama, as well as the work of German playwright Bertolt Brecht.

Revermann says he plans to use funding from the Humboldt award for an international research group examining how Latin and Greek texts are being translated into modern languages. The team includes classicists from University of Giessen in Germany (where the colleague who nominated Revermann for the Humboldt prize is located), and Suola Normale Superiore in Italy.

The project includes workshops in Germany, Italy and on the UUֱ�� Mississauga campus. Revermann will also be sponsoring UUֱ�� graduate students to participate in the workshops.

“I am particularly excited that this prize enables me to create an international forum for many early-career academics who, I hope, will be positively influenced by the experience for their own future work as researchers and pedagogues,” Revermann says.

Three UUֱ�� researchers are receiving Connaught Global Challenge Awards for projects addressing sustainable housing in First Nations communities, the role of automation and technology in health care and how humanistic research can promote equity in the present by exploring the diversity of the past.

This year’s winners and their projects are:

Sarah Haines, department of civil and mineral engineering, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering – From Harvest to House: Developing a Pathway to Housing Self-sufficiency in Remote First Nations Communities
Ajay Rao, department of historical studies, UUֱ�� Mississauga – The Global Past
Abi Sriharan, Dalla Lana School of Public Health – Future of Work in the Healthcare Sector in the Age of Intelligent Machines and Technologies (FORESIGHT)

“Sarah Haines, Ajay Rao and Abi Sriharan are advancing knowledge and developing innovative solutions to key challenges in Canada and around the world,” says Leah Cowen, vice-president of research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “The projects they are working on across disciplines with colleagues, students and partners in Canada and around the world will have a significant global impact.”

Rao is also the recipient of the Connaught Global Research Impact Program (C-GRIP) award, created to provide graduate students and post-doctoral researchers with unique global opportunities. Rao’s project includes scholars from across UUֱ��’s three campuses and establishes partnerships with researchers of the premodern world in Egypt, India and Singapore.

The Connaught Global Challenge is supported by the Connaught Fund – the largest internal university research funding program in Canada. Established 50 years ago through the sale of Connaught Medical Research Laboratories, which is known for the development of insulin, the fund has since provided more than $178.7 million to UUֱ�� scholars through programs such as the Connaught New Researcher Award, the Connaught Community Partnerships Research Program, the Connaught Innovation Award, the McLean Award and international doctoral scholarships.

Mairi Cowan, an associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of historical studies at the UUֱ�� Mississauga, has been named one of Ontario’s most outstanding university teachers.

She has received a 2020-2021 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award.

“Mairi Cowan loves to teach, and students praise her for respecting them as collaborators in the classroom,” said Edmund Pries, the chair of OCUFA’s award committee. “Her passion for history, attentiveness to the needs of her students, and her creativity exemplify the effectiveness of her approach to education.”

A historian of the late medieval and early modern world specializing in the social and religious histories of New France and Scotland, Cowan was also recognized recently for excellence in teaching with primary sources.

During the pandemic, Cowan balanced live and recorded teaching. For her large first-year history course, she pre-recorded her weekly lecture in four or five short parts interspersed with activities, such as watching a video or exploring a website. Later in the week, she would get together online with her students so they could ask questions and discuss the material.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s recipients have distinguished themselves through their dedication and boundless energy,” said OCUFA president Sue Wurtele.

Dragana Obradović, an associate professor in UUֱ��’s department of Slavic languages and literatures in the Faculty of Arts & Science, and Micah Stickel, a professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, were also named winners of the OCUFA Teaching Award.
