The UUֱ�� has been recognized by Forbes as one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity 2023.

Forbes and Statista selected Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity based on independent surveys of more than 12,000 employees working part-time or full-time for companies employing at least 500 people in Canada. Companies were also assessed on gender diversity among their top executives and/or board members, and indicators such as tangible diversity-related initiatives, resource groups for employees, and proactive communication of diversity. The recipients were announced on July 11.

“Being named one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity speaks to the deep commitment and hard work of faculty members, librarians, and staff across the UUֱ��,” said Kelly Hannah-Moffat, vice-president, People Strategy, Equity & Culture. “Our shared efforts to foster a culture of belonging at UUֱ�� are making a significant impact, and we will continue to build on this progress as we work to embed equity, diversity, and inclusion into all aspects of life at the university.”

The UUֱ�� has been recognized by Forbes as one of Canada’s best employers for 2023 – just weeks after being named one of Greater Toronto’s top employers for 2023.

“The award is an acknowledgement of UUֱ��’s commitment to creating a safe and equitable working environment, and providing accessible supports for our community,” says Heather Boon, acting vice-president of people strategy, equity and culture. “This work is ongoing. There is always more to do, and I’m grateful that UUֱ�� is willing to push the boundaries of past practice – and to keep improving on the progress we have made.”

The ranking is based on independent surveys of more than 12,000 fulltime and parttime employees at companies employing at least 500 people in Canada. In anonymous surveys, employees were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family.

Employee evaluations were also asked which employers in their respective industries stood out either positively or negatively. Participants were asked to give their opinion on topics such as working conditions, salary potential for development, and company image.

The UUֱ�� is one of the top five employers in Canada, according to a ranking by Forbes.

In the global media company’s annual list of Canada’s Best Employers released Jan. 26, UUֱ�� moved up five spots from tenth overall in 2020 to fifth in 2021.

The ranking is based on an independent survey of more than 8,000 Canadian employees working for companies with more than 500 employees in Canada and includes non-unionized and unionized employers. Participants were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family.

“UUֱ�� attracts, retains and engages its faculty and staff through a number of inclusive equity initiatives that support employees over various life and career stages. Our ability to attract great talent across the university is what helps make us successful,” said Kelly Hannah-Moffat, vice-president of human resources and equity. “The university is delighted to be recognized on the Forbes list of Canada’s Best Employers 2021. This is particularly meaningful in a year where faculty, staff and the university worked together to address the challenges of the global pandemic.”

Equitable compensation, generous parental leave and child-care benefits, tuition waivers, phased retirement and a defined benefit pension plan are available for appointed faculty, librarians and staff, Hannah-Moffat said, noting a collegial relationship with employee groups allows the university to continue to be a top employer. As well, the True Blue Recognition Platform showcases many of the annual awards that make up UUֱ��’s formal recognition strategy, and allows colleagues to informally recognize each other for small victories and day-to-day accomplishments.
