Professors Hoi-Kwong Lo and J.J. Garcia-Luna-Aceves have been selected by IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization, as 2023 recipients for prestigious, career-spanning awards.

Lo, a professor in the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, cross-appointed to the department of physics in the Faculty of Arts & Science, was awarded the IEEE Photonics Society Quantum Electronics Award for his research in practical quantum cryptography and quantum networks.

Lo was among the first to prove that the encryption provided by one of the best-known applications of quantum cryptography, called quantum key distribution (QKD), is virtually unbreakable. He says he’s grateful for UUֱ�� taking a chance on him.

“They hired me over 20 years ago, back when quantum computing was just an obscure intellectual curiosity, and gave me the opportunity to forge my path,” he says. “Winning this award means a lot to me and hopefully, in a small way, to UUֱ�� too.”

Garcia-Luna-Aceves, who was awarded the IEEE Harry H. Goode Memorial Award, joined ECE recently and has decades of research in routing algorithms, protocols and architectures in computer networks. Like Lo, his work has been adopted for everyday technology, such as the routing algorithms for today’s wireless and server networks. He holds 70 U.S. patents and has published three books.

“I am of course very proud of my research,” Garcia-Luna-Aceves says. “However, what has given me most joy is my success in sharing with my students the thrill of discovery and invention. I am thrilled that many former students became great researchers in their own right.

“I would like to think my mentoring had a small part to do with that.”

Having two professors from ECE recognized with such prestigious awards is a testament to the breadth and strength of our department, Professor Deepa Kundur, chair of ECE says. “I’m excited to see where their leadership in their respective fields will take us.”

Professors Tony Chan Carusone and Joyce Poon of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have been appointed IEEE Fellows.

The designation by the world’s largest technical professional association is reserved for members whose outstanding accomplishments in engineering, science and technology have shown significant value to society.

“The commitment and talent that they bring to their work exemplify the ideals of engineering: bettering society while mentoring the next generation,” says Professor Deepa Kundur, chair of ECE. “Sincere congratulations to Tony and Joyce on this prestigious recognition.”

Cited for “contributions to integrated circuits for digital communication,” Chan Carusone is an expert in microchip design.

“That is where the rubber meets the road in electrical and computer engineering,” he says. “And I saw digital communication technologies as the most transformative technology of our age.”

For the past 10 years, says Chan Carusone, “I’ve been working to lower the power consumption of the microelectronics that handle our communication traffic, with hopes of reducing our footprint on the planet.”

Cited by IEEE for “contributions to integrated photonics on silicon and resonant microphotonic devices,” Poon seeks to advance computing and reduce power consumption by using light from the infrared wavelength to the visible spectrum.

“What drives me and my research is envisioning what computers will be like in ten years or so,” Poon says. “Quantum computing, neuromorphic computing, wearable displays, and eventually brain interfaces are all part of that future. I see photonics taking computing technology into new directions.”

Professors Natalie Enright Jerger and Andreas Moshovos of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have been appointed IEEE Fellows.

The designation by the world’s largest technical professional association is reserved for members whose research in engineering, science and technology have shown significant value to society.

Enright Jerger was cited by IEEE for her “contributions to networks-on-chip (NoCs) for many-core architectures.” NoCs are a mechanism that allows multiple processors on a single chip to talk to one another, relieving some of the “congestion” that occurs as computer chips continue to shrink in size.

She says it has been exciting to see how her ideas shaped the development of the field, including the widespread adoption of On-Chip Networks, a textbook she co-authored that’s now in its second edition.

“I’m really proud to have helped educate students in the area, further driving innovation.”

Moshovos was cited “for contributions to out-of-order processor microarchitecture and multiprocessor memory systems.” An out-of-order processor is one whose execution is dictated by the data readily available and not the original programming order, reducing idling time.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with such talent throughout the years,” says Moshovos. “Truly – in every single piece of work I have been involved with. I’m humbled by this recognition of my peers, and very appreciative of the support from my colleagues and students at the UUֱ�� and elsewhere.”

Professor Deepa Kundur, chair of ECE, congratulated Enright Jerger and Moshovos on achieving this milestone in their careers.

“It is a wonderful recognition of their stature in their fields.”

Professor Tim Barfoot of the UUֱ�� Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Robotics and Automation Society, for contributions to mobile robot navigation.

“As a kid building my first robots of out Lego, I could never have imagined where this field and career would take me,” said Barfoot, who is a double alumnus of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. “It’s been a lot of fun so far and I’m excited to see where robotics goes next.

“I would like to thank all those that helped me along the way through Engineering Science, MDA, and UTIAS, and I would like to dedicate this honour to another IEEE Fellow, Professor Bruce Francis (1947-2018), who served as an influential mentor to me,” he said.

Barfoot’s research focuses on the visual navigation of mobile robots. Such robots are used in many different sectors, including transportation, planetary exploration, mining, warehouses, offices, and military applications.

“Training robots to navigate safely and autonomously is among the most complex engineering challenges of our time, and Professor Barfoot’s embodies the world-leading advances we are making in this area,” said Chris Damaren, director of UTIAS.

“On behalf of the entire Institute, I warmly congratulate him on this well-deserved honour.”
