Iakoiehwáhtha Patton, an undergraduate student at the UUֱ�� who also goes by Ioka, has received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University.

The fourth-year student in the Faculty of Arts & Science and member of Victoria College is one of 11 Canadian recipients of the prestigious scholarship program this year.

A member of the Kanien'kehá:ka First Nations community, Patton says her identity as an Indigenous woman has informed her studies in art history, anthropology and Renaissance studies.

“I didn’t have Indigenous academic role models so I really had to pave my own path,” she told her college. “If I can help to create structures and pathways for other Indigenous women in academia, that would make me feel very happy.”

Patton is the president of UUֱ��’s History of Art Students' Association, and a research assistant to Reid Locklin, an associate professor in the department for the study of religion, writing about the intersections of art history, Christianity, coloniality and Indigeneity for the online resource Teaching and Learning as Treaty Peoples.

Patton says she plans to study the depiction of North American Indigenous peoples in Netherlandish art when she goes to Oxford next year, where the costs of her degree will be covered by the Rhodes Scholarship.

“This achievement would be extraordinary for any student, but I think that it’s even more inspiring since Patton began her academic journey at Vic just before the pandemic started,” said Professor Rhonda McEwen, president and vice-chancellor of Victoria University in the UUֱ��.

“Within a few short months, she had to return to her community and learn remotely like so many other students. Patton overcame every obstacle and never missed the opportunity to contribute to the community at Vic and UUֱ��.”

Nicole Mfoafo-M’Carthy, a second-year medical student at the UUֱ��’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been named a Rhodes Scholar.

The Rhodes Scholarship is the world’s oldest international scholarship program. It identifies young people who have the potential to lead and make a positive impact on the world and covers expenses for a degree at the University of Oxford.

One of the ways Mfoafo-M’Carthy hopes to create change is through research. She has a keen interest in policy related to gender, disability and intersectionality in the workplace.

“Work is such a large part of many people’s lives, but differences between the experiences of people of different genders are often overlooked, especially in relation to other positions in the world like disability for example. There's a tremendous opportunity to explore what can make workplaces safer and better for everyone,” she says.

At UUֱ��, the MD student is working on a qualitative assessment of moral injury, the cognitive and emotional response after events that go against a person’s own moral code, in long-term care workers.

“If someone had told me when I arrived at UUֱ�� last fall that I would become a Rhodes Scholar, I’d never have imagined it. But over time, and with more exposure to the opportunities here, I could see how this opportunity aligned with what I wanted for myself. And I was fortunate to receive so much support from people here at UUֱ��,” says Mfoafo-M'Carthy.

For her academic excellence, inspiring leadership and compassionate service on behalf of marginalized community members, Ikran Jama has received the John H. Moss Scholarship.

The honour is one of the Awards of Excellence presented by the UUֱ�� Alumni Association in collaboration with the university. The prestigious program dates back to 1921 and recognizes outstanding faculty, staff and students.

While completing a double major in international relations and criminology and sociolegal studies, with a minor in African studies, Jama had a remarkable record of effective leadership within many different communities. Now serving a second term as president of the Arts and Science Students’ Union, she represents 26,000 undergraduates and manages a $500,000 budget. She also established the annual Student Success Day Conference, which brings students from racialized communities to campus to encourage them to consider post-secondary studies.

As a Rhodes Scholar heading to the University of Oxford, Jama plans to pursue a Master of Criminology and Criminal Justice and a Master of Forced Migration and Refugee Studies to further her commitment to bringing agency to marginalized communities.

In honouring Jama, the alumni association notes that Jama's professors praised her for her extraordinary intellectual rigour and work ethic, as well as her maturity, compassion and empathy.

The UUֱ��’s Jeffrey Fasegha has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University next year.

“I’m immensely grateful to my family, my friends and to the university for their support throughout the process,” Fasegha said. “It truly takes a village.”

In June, Fasegha graduated with a bachelor of commerce in finance with minors in psychology and economics. The University College grad grew up in Calgary and is passionate about entrepreneurship and using innovation as a tool for economic and social development – particularly in Nigeria, where he was born.

At UUֱ��, Fasegha led independent research on social enterprises in the Nigerian energy industry, founded the Black Career Conference, co-founded Black Rotman Commerce, and held several leadership positions in finance student groups where he worked to increase equity for marginalized groups.

At Oxford, Fasegha plans to focus on African studies and public policy with a focus on the innovation economy. Joining him at Oxford will be fellow Rhodes Scholar Ikran Jama, also of the Faculty of Arts & Science.

“We are all incredibly proud of Ikran and Jeffrey, our newest Rhodes Scholars,” President Meric Gertler said. “Through their record of scholarly achievement, leadership and social engagement, they are an inspiration to all members of the UUֱ�� community.

“We look forward to hearing about their accomplishments in the years to come.”

The UUֱ��’s Ikran Jama has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University next year.

“As the daughter of refugees, it’s hard to put into words how much this means to me, my family, and my community,” Jama said. “I’ve had to overcome a lot of barriers to even get to this stage in my studies and this award is a sign to me and anyone in the same position that we can always achieve incredible things.”

Now in her second term as president of the Arts and Science Students’ Union, Jama is completing a double major in criminology and socio-legal studies and international relations with a minor in African studies at Victoria College. A mentor for Somali youth, she is passionate about amplifying the voices of marginalized and underrepresented communities and interested in how the law affects the lives of immigrant and refugee youth. She hopes to apply her studies to advance criminal justice reforms at home and abroad.

At Oxford, Jama plans to continue exploring the relationships between migration and the law through studies in criminology and criminal justice. Joining her there will be fellow Rhodes Scholar Jeffrey Fasegha, also of the Faculty of Arts & Science.

“We look forward to hearing about their accomplishments in the years to come.”
