Martin Krkošek, an associate professor in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the UUֱ��’s Faculty of Arts & Science, has been awarded an E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Presented annually to up to six researchers, the award recognizes early-stage academic researchers in the natural sciences and engineering, enhancing their research capacity so that they can inspire and lead others.

A Canada Research Chair in population ecology, Krkošek sheds light on disease dynamics between wild and farmed salmon on Canada’s west coast. He collaborates with Indigenous communities, particularly with the Dzawada'enuxw and ‘Namgis First Nation, involving community members in his work.

"This award recognizes a collective effort of a community of students, collaborators, mentors and local peoples in the remote and unceded Kwakwakaʼwakw territory," says Krkošek. "I am exceptionally fortunate for this village that raised me as a mathematical and field biologist."

Krkošek’s “career and his vital research in this field are richly deserving of this support," says Melanie Woodin, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science – a sentiment echoed by Professor Stephen Wright, who won the Steacie Fellowship in 2015 and who is now EEB chair: "This stellar achievement reflects the importance of his work for both broad ecological understanding and for fisheries management."

UUֱ�� researchers are being recognized with the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering, the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship, the Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering and the Synergy Award for Innovation – top honours from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

“The UUֱ�� congratulates these remarkable leaders whose research is improving the lives of people across Canada and around the world,” says Professor Leah Cowen, UUֱ��’s associate vice-president of research. “Their work is transforming the worlds of theoretical physics and nanorobotics, and making an impact on everything from the air we breathe to our understanding of ecology and evolutionary biology.”

The prestigious Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering was awarded to Sajeev John, a University Professor in the department of physics in the Faculty of Arts & Science, for discoveries that have driven advances in physics, chemistry, engineering and medicine. Examples include his pioneering research that enables photons to be trapped and controlled in an optical microchip and the invention of Photonic Band Gap (PBG) materials, which allow confinement of photons to a microscopic region the size of the wavelength of light.

The Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering was awarded to a multidisciplinary team of researchers from UUֱ��’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Temerty Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Arts & Science, as well as from McGill University and the Ontario government for developing innovative tools and strategies for studying air pollution and its effects.

An E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship was awarded to Martin Krkošek, an associate professor in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the Faculty of Arts & Science, for his research into the disease dynamics between wild and farmed salmon on Canada’s west coast.

A Synergy Award for Innovation recognized Professors Yu Sun, Jane Howe, Tobin Filleter and Doug Perovic from the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering for their longstanding partnership with Hitachi High-Tech Canada (HTC) – a collaboration that has led to numerous scientific discoveries and commercialized products.

Marc Johnson, an associate professor of evolutionary biology at the UUֱ�� Mississauga, has been awarded an E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Presented annually to up to six early-stage academic researchers, the fellowship offers $250,000 over two years to help “enhance their research capacity, so that they can become leaders in their field and inspire others,” according to the NSERC website.

“It’s the honour of a career, maybe the greatest I will receive,” says Johnson, who calls the fellowship a “game-changer” for the funds it provides and the time to focus exclusively on research without teaching and administrative responsibilities.

“It’s the time I’m most excited about. This is more important than any money they could have given me,” he says. “This is my opportunity to take my research to the next level and make discoveries that could change the world.”

“The UUֱ�� congratulates Marc Johnson on this important recognition,” said University Professor Ted Sargent, UUֱ��’s vice-president of research and innovation and strategic initiatives. “His Global Urban Evolution Project is the world’s largest collaborative study of how urbanization around the world is influencing the ecology and evolution of organisms – and his EvoEco Lab is partnering with hundreds of scientists around the world.

“His work will help us better understand the evolutionary challenges posed by urbanization and climate change.”

“Marc is passionate about science,” said Professor Joel Levine, chair of the department of biology at UUֱ�� Mississauga. “His research is outstanding and his vision is extraordinary. The department of biology is proud of this award.

Assistant Professor Tovi Grossman of the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science has been awarded an E.W. R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

NSERC awards up to six fellowships annually to outstanding and highly promising scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers.

An expert in human-computer interaction, with a focus on understanding and improving human learning in complex scenarios, Grossman joined the UUֱ�� in 2018 after working as a distinguished research scientist in Autodesk Research’s User Interface Research group. He leads a team developing technologies that balance the technical precision of computers with the creativity and ingenuity of humans.

“We are proud to celebrate this high honour for Tovi Grossman, who is both a member of our faculty and an illustrious alumnus of our PhD program, said Professor Marsha Chechik, chair of the department of computer science. “His significant contributions to the area of human-computer interaction are shaping the future of how we learn with technology in complex, real-world settings.”

In 2019, Grossman was appointed NSERC/Autodesk Industrial Research Chair in Human Computer-Interaction.

“From AI-assisted drone navigation to wearable sensors that allow their users to perform intricate tasks in virtual environments, Tovi Grossman’s research is helping to develop technologies that will enhance the lives of Canadians,” said University Professor Ted Sargent, vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “The UUֱ�� congratulates Assistant Professor Grossman on this important recognition.”
