Bruce Kidd and Brenda McCabe receive Vivek Goel Faculty Citizenship Award

For their exemplary, decades-long service to the university, Bruce Kidd and Brenda McCabe have received the Vivek Goel Faculty Citizenship Award.

The honour is one of the Awards of Excellence presented by the UUֱ�� Alumni Association in collaboration with the university. The prestigious program dates back to 1921 and recognizes outstanding faculty, staff and students.

An Olympian and professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, Kidd holds a long-standing career at UUֱ�� that includes serving as dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Health, warden of Hart House, and vice-president and principal of UUֱ�� Scarborough. In honouring Kidd, the alumni association noted that during his 50 years of service, he has created a transformative learning environment on campus, while serving as the university’s humans rights ambassador to the world.

McCabe is a professor in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. In 2008, she was appointed chair of the department of civil engineering – the first woman to chair any department at UUֱ�� Engineering. To mark the occasion, she created five new scholarships, named after the first five women to graduate from the department. In honouring McCabe, the alumni association noted that throughout her career, she’s championed the student experience, represented the engineering profession with high distinction, and advanced environmental sustainability

Professor Emeritus Paul Young has been appointed international secretary of the Royal Society of Canada.

The appointment places Young in a focal role at the society, with a mandate to collaborate with other national academies to address major global challenges. He will coordinate the society’s involvement at the upcoming G7, G20 and Commonwealth summits, as well as at a G7 Research Summit on “The Future of Digital Health.”

“I am humbled to have been asked to take on this role,” Young said.

Founded in 1882, the Royal Society of Canada elects leading scientists, researchers, scholars and artists into one of its three Academies: the Academy of the Arts and Humanities, the Academy of Social Sciences and the Academy of Science. The organization advises governments and NGOs, and celebrates Canadian academic and artistic accomplishment.

An engineering geophysicist, Young has served in numerous leadership roles at UUֱ��, including vice-president, research and innovation, and chair of the department of civil engineering.

“I am delighted to extend congratulations on this appointment to a critical role within the Royal Society of Canada,” said UUֱ�� Engineering Dean Chris Yip.
