Eight UUֱ�� staff members have been recognized with the Simcoe Hall Vice-Presidential Staff Award for 2021.

Established in 2013, the award recognizes outstanding contributions by unionized, confidential or professional and managerial staff who work in the president’s office, the division of the vice-president and provost, a vice-presidential division or the Office of the Governing Council. Assessment criteria include leading with equity and inclusion, making a significant contribution to a division or the broader university and contributing to team morale through an inspirational attitude that encourages colleagues to work harder, smarter and with resilience.

This year’s winners are:

UUֱ�� students, staff and faculty have been honoured with 2020 IDERD Impact Awards for their leadership and innovation in working towards the elimination of racism and the advancement of anti-racism.

The awards were announced at UUֱ��’s fifth annual International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) conference.

Entisar Yusuf received the student leadership award (individual) in recognition of her work founding and leading the Black Graduate Students Association and her thesis research on Black graduate students navigating higher education.

“Anti-racism in action is building awareness and changing attitudes to provide universal equitable access,” Yusuf said.

The UUֱ�� has been named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for the 14th consecutive year.

The competition, run by Mediacorp and The Globe and Mail, recognizes employers with exceptional workplace diversity and inclusiveness programs. Successful applicants are chosen for noteworthy and unique initiatives through a comparison of applicants from the same industry.

“The university is committed to building an intentionally diverse, equitable and inclusive working environment that engages and supports our community,” says Karima Hashmani, UUֱ��’s executive director, equity, diversity and inclusion. “This award recognizes our efforts to create initiatives, programs and systemic change, all of which require time, collective responsibility and a shift in culture.”

The award spotlights UUֱ��’s ongoing recruitment of equity-deserving groups including women, Indigenous, racialized persons, those with disabilities and LGBTQ2S+ communities. Examples include UUֱ��’s diversity internship in human resources and equity, a program for human resources graduates who self-identify as Indigenous, racialized or persons with disabilities. UUֱ��’s participation in Indigenous Career Fair, a networking event to help Indigenous youth prepare for and enter the labour market was also highlighted.

Jodie Glean-Mitchell, the director of UUֱ��’s Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office (ARCDO), has received the 2020 Black Business Professional Association (BBPA) Harry Jerome Diversity Award for her outstanding and inspirational work in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in education.

Among her many accomplishments, last year Glean-Mitchell and her team launched the inaugural Race, Equity & Action Speaker Series, which hosts local and international experts, academics and advocates to advance conversations and understandings of racial equity, diversity and inclusion in postsecondary environments. During the 2019-20 academic year, ARCDO hosted 40 education sessions reaching more than 1,400 participants, including UUֱ�� staff, students, faculty, librarians and external community members.

“Glean-Mitchell’s experience and knowledge of the complexities of anti-racism and cultural diversity have allowed her to create meaningful and responsive initiatives,” said Professor Kelly Hannah-Moffat, UUֱ��’s vice-president, human resources and equity. “Her efforts and commitment will continue to play an important role in fostering inclusiveness at the university and in helping us learn how to act on our commitment to anti-racism.”

Established in 1983, the annual BBPA Harry Jerome Awards celebrate outstanding and inspirational individuals in the Black community, including businesspeople, professionals, athletes, academics, artists and community leaders. Award recipients are selected from among nominees across Canada.
