Teaching Excellence Awards

Six teaching assistants (TAs) and one graduate course instructor (CI) have been recognized with 2024 Teaching Excellence Awards by the UUֱ��’s Teaching Assistants’ Training Program.

The TA Teaching Excellence, BIPOC TA Teaching Excellence and CI Teaching Excellence awards recognize the outstanding contributions of TAs and graduate student CIs who regularly support, inspire and challenge undergraduate students.

The recipients of the TA Teaching Excellence Awards are:

Shaghayegh (Shay) Chavoshian, Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering
Cassandra Olsen, department of English, Faculty of Arts & Science
Sam Sanchinel, Women and Gender Studies Institute, Faculty of Arts & Science
Qusai Hassan, department of chemistry, Faculty of Arts & Science
Paul Pritchard, department of sociology, UUֱ�� Mississauga

In 2022, the Teaching Assistants’ Training Program introduced the BIPOC Teaching Excellence Award to recognize lived experiences of Black, Indigenous and racialized communities whose academic experiences have been impacted by systemic barriers, and to highlight their accomplishments and excellence in teaching practice. The winner of this award for 2024 is Titilola Aiyegbusi from the department of English in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

The recipient of the CI Teaching Excellence Award is Kat Furtado from the department of classics in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

The UUֱ�� has announced the recipients of the 2020 Teaching Assistant (TA) Teaching Excellence Awards and Course Instructor (CI) Teaching Excellence Awards, presented annually by the Teaching Assistants’ Training Program.

“Congratulations to this exceptional group of students,” says Carol Rolheiser, director of the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation. “We were very impressed with the strong pool of applicants, but this year’s winners stood out and have shown their commitment to enhancing the undergraduate education experience across our university.”

The TA Teaching Excellence Awards celebrate the remarkable contributions of graduate students teaching in an undergraduate classroom and the value of TAs who regularly inspire and challenge their students. This year’s winners of the TA Teaching Excellence Awards are:

Virginie Coindre of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering
Marc De Benedetti of the department of chemical and physical sciences, UUֱ�� Mississauga
Ryan Persadie of the Women and Gender Studies Institute, UUֱ�� St. George
Nida Mustafa of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Health and Society, UUֱ�� Scarborough
Julie Prior, of the department of English in the Faculty of Arts & Science
Andrew Wilson of the department of math in the Faculty of Arts & Science

The CI Teaching Excellence Award recognizes the work of one graduate student whose work as a sole-responsibility course instructor shows educational leadership, meaningful contributions to course and curriculum development, and impact on student learning. This year’s winner of the CI Teaching Excellence Award is Danielle Tessaro of the department of human geography, UUֱ�� Scarborough.
