Jonathan Rose, a professor in the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering at the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, has received the 2024 Engineers Canada Gold Medal Award.

The award is Engineers Canada’s most prestigious honour, recognizing outstanding engineering achievements and leadership in the Canadian engineering community.

Rose is a leading innovator in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) – prefabricated digital chips that can be programmed to become any digital circuit. His research has recently pivoted to the application of software and large language models in the service of mental health. Currently, he is working with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), using large language models to develop a chatbot that can help people stop smoking.

“Professor Jonathan Rose has been a visionary leader in engineering research, education and entrepreneurship for decades,” said Professor Christopher Yip, dean of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.

“On behalf of the faculty, my warmest congratulations to him on this well-deserved recognition and my heartfelt thanks for his many contributions to our community.”

Five members of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering community have been elected fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

Christopher Yip, dean of the faculty, Natalie Enright Jerger, a professor in the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering, and three alumni – Benoit Boulet, Susan Doniz and Alfred Yu – are among 54 new fellows elected to the academy in 2024.

The Canadian Academy of Engineering is a national institution through which individuals who have made outstanding contributions to engineering in Canada provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canadians.

“I am honoured to be joining this extraordinary group of engineers, which includes more than 50 UUֱ�� faculty members providing national leadership in engineering and engineering education,” said Yip.

“On behalf of the faculty, congratulations to all the newly elected fellows from the UUֱ�� Engineering community.”

Professors Hoi-Kwong Lo and Steve Mann from the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have been named 2024 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) Fellows.

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization. Its fellowships represent the highest grade of membership, and are given to those whose accomplishments in engineering, science and technology have shown significant value to society.

Lo was named for his contributions to the theory and practice of quantum cryptography. “To develop quantum science into technologies, it is important to consider real-life constraints and imperfections, which is an engineer’s strength,” said Lo. “These real-life constraints should be regarded as opportunities, in the same way that real-life constraints of quantum phenomena inspire new research directions.”

Mann was recognized for contributions to wearable and immersive computing technologies.

For decades, Mann used computer-mediated vision systems that he invented, which he wore as a head-mounted display in his everyday life.

Many of his inventions occurred in the field of digital imaging. For example, he invented High Dynamic Range (HDR), which combines multiple differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter. HDR is now used in nearly every commercially manufactured camera and smartphone.

“Professors Lo and Mann are seen as pioneers in their respective fields, with distinguished careers that are internationally renowned,” said Professor Deepa Kundur, chair of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering. “Their election as IEEE Fellows reflects the significant role they play within the worldwide engineering research and development community.”

UUֱ�� researcher Hoi-Kwong Lo has received 2022 CAP-INO Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Applied Photonics.

The national award, presented jointly by the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) and Institut National d’Optique (INO), recognizes Lo’s impact in the field of quantum communications, including his work in quantum cryptography.

“The growth in quantum cryptography over the last few years has been truly impressive,” says Lo, a professor in the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering who is cross-appointed with the department of physics in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

“It wasn’t long ago that some of the techniques being commercialized today were considered merely promising theories – now they’re changing how the world protects its data.”

The medal is a community-wide distinction: CAP represents over 1,600 Canadian physicists and physics students while INO is Canada’s largest centre of expertise in optics and photonics.

“Professor Lo has earned this recognition with decades of ground-breaking work, and I couldn’t be happier for him,” says Professor Deepa Kundur, chair of ECE. “He’s had a massive impact on the direction of the field, and I suspect his influence will only grow as we enter the quantum era.”

Three professors in the UUֱ��’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have been recognized by the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) for their distinguished contributions to engineering.

Professor Michael Carter of the department of mechanical and industrial engineering (MIE) has received the Julian C. Smith Medal for “achievement in the development of Canada,” while Professors Natalie Enright Jerger of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering and Xinyu Liu (MIE) have been elected fellows for “excellence in engineering and services to the profession and to society.”

The founder of UUֱ��’s Centre for Healthcare Engineering, Carter is a recognized leader in systems engineering approaches to health care, influencing health policy and practice across Canada through his leadership positions, educational initiatives and work with health-care organizations. The tools he has created are used by government and health-care organizations throughout the country.

Enright Jerger, the Canada Research Chair in Computer Architecture, designs new ways of arranging the components of computer processors to optimize performance, helping manufacturers like Intel, AMD and Qualcomm build faster devices while keeping power usage and costs low.

Liu is internationally recognized for his innovative contributions in paper-based microfluidics, microrobotics, and flexible/stretchable sensors, with applications in disease diagnostics and treatment, basic biology research and wearable electronics.

“On behalf of the Faculty, congratulations to Professors Carter, Enright Jerger and Liu on these well-deserved honours,” says UUֱ�� Engineering Dean  Christopher Yip. “This recognition by the Engineering Institute of Canada reflects the wide-ranging contributions and impact of our faculty members as researchers, innovators and educators.”

Professors Tony Chan Carusone and Joyce Poon of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have been appointed IEEE Fellows.

The designation by the world’s largest technical professional association is reserved for members whose outstanding accomplishments in engineering, science and technology have shown significant value to society.

“The commitment and talent that they bring to their work exemplify the ideals of engineering: bettering society while mentoring the next generation,” says Professor Deepa Kundur, chair of ECE. “Sincere congratulations to Tony and Joyce on this prestigious recognition.”

Cited for “contributions to integrated circuits for digital communication,” Chan Carusone is an expert in microchip design.

“That is where the rubber meets the road in electrical and computer engineering,” he says. “And I saw digital communication technologies as the most transformative technology of our age.”

For the past 10 years, says Chan Carusone, “I’ve been working to lower the power consumption of the microelectronics that handle our communication traffic, with hopes of reducing our footprint on the planet.”

Cited by IEEE for “contributions to integrated photonics on silicon and resonant microphotonic devices,” Poon seeks to advance computing and reduce power consumption by using light from the infrared wavelength to the visible spectrum.

“What drives me and my research is envisioning what computers will be like in ten years or so,” Poon says. “Quantum computing, neuromorphic computing, wearable displays, and eventually brain interfaces are all part of that future. I see photonics taking computing technology into new directions.”

The Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering's Aimy Bazylak, Vaughn Betz and Frank Vecchio have been elected 2022 Fellows of the Engineering Institute of Canada for “excellence in engineering and services to the profession and to society.”

“On behalf of the Faculty, my warmest congratulations to Professors Bazylak, Betz and Vecchio,” says UUֱ�� Engineering Dean Christopher Yip. “Their outstanding contributions illustrate some of the key areas in which UUֱ�� Engineers are making an impact across disciplines and sectors.”

A professor with the department of mechanical and industrial engineering, Bazylak holds the Canada Research Chair for Thermofluidics in Clean Energy and is working to advance fuel cells, electrolyzers and batteries for clean power production and energy storage without greenhouse gas emissions. Her research is focused on the use of modelling and real-time imaging to design new materials for high efficiency and performance.

Betz, a professor with the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering, holds the NSERC/Intel Industrial Research Chair in Programmable Silicon. His work has revolutionized the use of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), to allow engineers to rapidly create new hardware systems and realize their design visions.

Vecchio, a professor emeritus with the department of civil and mineral engineering, is the former Bahen/Tanenbaum Chair in Civil Engineering. An internationally respected authority on the behaviour of concrete structures, he has contributed substantially to increasing the safety and reliability of Canada’s infrastructure. Vecchio is the co-developer of the Modified Compression Field Theory, a groundbreaking conceptual model for describing the behaviour of reinforced concrete under general load conditions, which has been incorporated into design codes in Canada and internationally.

Professor Roman Genov of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering in the the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering has received a Connaught Innovation Award for his team's work on a new class of cameras known as coded-exposure-pixel (CEP) CMOS image sensors.

The cameras capture information about a visual scene based on the light transport – information on how light travels to, through and from the scene – instead of only the reflected light intensity.

“The Connaught Innovation Award will bring valuable seed funding for our project, 'Energy-efficient coded-exposure-pixel cameras for accurate imaging without motion artifacts,' that will help our team – led by Professor Kiriakos Kutulakos of the department of computer science and myself – to accelerate the development of a new class of computational cameras for emerging computational photography applications,” Genov said.

“In our cameras, the exposure time for each individual pixel can be dynamically reprogrammed for each video frame, enabling new capabilities such as motion-tolerant imaging of moving objects in three dimensions and with a high dynamic range.”

The award will help fund the prototyping, demonstration and commercialization of the new image sensors, Genov said.

Professors Natalie Enright Jerger and Andreas Moshovos of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have been appointed IEEE Fellows.

The designation by the world’s largest technical professional association is reserved for members whose research in engineering, science and technology have shown significant value to society.

Enright Jerger was cited by IEEE for her “contributions to networks-on-chip (NoCs) for many-core architectures.” NoCs are a mechanism that allows multiple processors on a single chip to talk to one another, relieving some of the “congestion” that occurs as computer chips continue to shrink in size.

She says it has been exciting to see how her ideas shaped the development of the field, including the widespread adoption of On-Chip Networks, a textbook she co-authored that’s now in its second edition.

“I’m really proud to have helped educate students in the area, further driving innovation.”

Moshovos was cited “for contributions to out-of-order processor microarchitecture and multiprocessor memory systems.” An out-of-order processor is one whose execution is dictated by the data readily available and not the original programming order, reducing idling time.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with such talent throughout the years,” says Moshovos. “Truly – in every single piece of work I have been involved with. I’m humbled by this recognition of my peers, and very appreciative of the support from my colleagues and students at the UUֱ�� and elsewhere.”

Professor Deepa Kundur, chair of ECE, congratulated Enright Jerger and Moshovos on achieving this milestone in their careers.

“It is a wonderful recognition of their stature in their fields.”
