This is an incredible career achievement for a scholar, and it will allow them each to continue their important work in their respective areas of focus.”</p> <h4>The 2021 Guggenheim Fellows:</h4> <p>A distinguished professor at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crimsl.utoronto.ca/" target="_blank">Centre for Criminology &amp; Sociolegal Studies</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://cdts.utoronto.ca/" target="_blank">Centre for Diaspora &amp; Transnational Studies</a>, Clarke conducts&nbsp;research on issues related to legal institutions, international legal domains, religious nationalism and the politics of globalization and race.&nbsp;Her books include <em>Fictions of Justice: The International Criminal Court and the Challenge of Legal Pluralism in Sub-Saharan Africa</em><span style="font-variant-ligatures:normal; text-align:start"><span style="text-decoration-thickness:initial"><span style="text-decoration-style:initial"><span style="text-decoration-color:initial"><span style="float:none">.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><a href="/celebrates/kamari-clarke-awarded-guggenheim-fellowship">Read more about Clarke&nbsp;</a></p> <p>A<a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/"> University Professor</a>&nbsp;and a distinguished professor in the&nbsp;department of chemistry, Kumacheva is cross-appointed to <a href="https://bme.utoronto.ca/">the&nbsp;Institute of&nbsp;Biomedical Engineering</a>. An&nbsp;expert in polymers and nanoparticles who is renowned for her microfluidics and polymer research, Kumacheva holds&nbsp;a Canada Research Chair in Advanced Polymer Materials and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Officer of the Order of Canada.</p> <p><a href="/celebrates/eugenia-kumacheva-awarded-guggenheim-fellowship">Read more about Kumacheva</a></p> <p>A professor in the department for the study of religion and the department of anthropology, Mittermaier brings&nbsp;together textual analysis and ethnographic fieldwork with research that focuses on modern Islam in Egypt. She is the author of the books,&nbsp;<em>Giving to God: Islamic Charity in Revolutionary Times</em> and <em>Dreams that Matter: Egyptian Landscapes of the Imagination</em>.</p> <p><a href="/celebrates/amira-mittermaier-awarded-guggenheim-fellowship">Read more about Mittermaier</a></p> <p>A professor in the department for the study of religion, O’Neill is a cultural anthropologist and director of <a href="https://cdts.utoronto.ca/">the Centre for Diaspora &amp; Transnational Studies</a> who works principally in Guatemala City. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz_7Rc4B1B4">A member of the Royal Society of Canada</a>, O’Neill is a pioneering scholar on the subject of clerical sexual abuse, particularly as it transcends borders. Each fellow receives $10,000 to hire graduate students as research assistants, and an additional $5,000 for professional development.</p> <p>Prof. Taylor is planning a fourth-year undergraduate course that will expand on her existing third-year offering, “Indigenous Peoples and Criminal Justice.” The new course will offer students the opportunity to challenge their own understandings of law, settler colonialism, crime, justice and Indigenous ways of knowing and being.&nbsp; Working in collaboration with the Centre for Indigenous Studies, Prof. Taylor plans to develop relationships between Indigenous communities and her students “rooted in relevance, respect, reciprocity and responsibility.”</p> <p>“I am grateful to be able to create an opportunity for experiential learning focussed on uncovering and challenging the systemic gendered racism perpetuated against Indigenous Peoples by the Canadian state," she says. The prestigious program dates back to 1921 and recognizes outstanding faculty, staff and students.</p> <p>A professor in the Faculty of Law, Macklin also holds the Chair in Human Rights Law, is director of UUֱ’s Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies and serves as the faculty adviser to UUֱ Law’s International Human Rights Program.</p> <p>She has authored or contributed to critical policy reports on multiple citizenship, asylum and resettlement, the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, legal aid for immigrants and refugees, national security and non-citizens, and business and human rights.</p> <p>In addition to serving as pro bono counsel, Macklin regularly provides academic guidance in formulating legal positions and drafting facta that form the basis of litigation.
