Four UUֱ�� scholars – Kamari Clarke, Eugenia Kumacheva, Amira Mittermaier and Kevin Lewis O'Neill – have been awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships.

The Faculty of Arts & Science researchers are among 184 artists, writers, scholars and scientists selected through a rigorous peer-review process from almost 3,000 applicants this year.

“Congratulations to Professors Clarke, Kumacheva, Mittermaier and O’Neill on this prestigious honour,” said Melanie Woodin, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. “We are thrilled that four members of our faculty are receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship. This is an incredible career achievement for a scholar, and it will allow them each to continue their important work in their respective areas of focus.”

The 2021 Guggenheim Fellows:

A distinguished professor at the Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies and the Centre for Diaspora & Transnational Studies, Clarke conducts research on issues related to legal institutions, international legal domains, religious nationalism and the politics of globalization and race. Her books include Fictions of Justice: The International Criminal Court and the Challenge of Legal Pluralism in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Kerry Taylor, an assistant professor, teaching stream, at the Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science, has received a UUֱ�� Teaching Fellowship.

The fellowship – one of two awarded in 2019-20 – gives teaching stream faculty members the opportunity to engage in a pedagogical project that will benefit students and that is in an area of institutional priority. Each fellow receives $10,000 to hire graduate students as research assistants, and an additional $5,000 for professional development.

Prof. Taylor is planning a fourth-year undergraduate course that will expand on her existing third-year offering, “Indigenous Peoples and Criminal Justice.” The new course will offer students the opportunity to challenge their own understandings of law, settler colonialism, crime, justice and Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Working in collaboration with the Centre for Indigenous Studies, Prof. Taylor plans to develop relationships between Indigenous communities and her students “rooted in relevance, respect, reciprocity and responsibility.”

“I am grateful to be able to create an opportunity for experiential learning focussed on uncovering and challenging the systemic gendered racism perpetuated against Indigenous Peoples by the Canadian state," she says. "As a white settler academic, I hope to expand my own holistic teaching praxis to foster and value many ways of knowing and being."

For her profound impact on Canadian and global policy relating to migration, citizenship and human rights, Professor Audrey Macklin has received the Carolyn Tuohy Impact on Public Policy Award.

The honour is part of the Awards of Excellence program presented by the UUֱ�� Alumni Association in collaboration with the university. The prestigious program dates back to 1921 and recognizes outstanding faculty, staff and students.

A professor in the Faculty of Law, Macklin also holds the Chair in Human Rights Law, is director of UUֱ��’s Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies and serves as the faculty adviser to UUֱ�� Law’s International Human Rights Program.

She has authored or contributed to critical policy reports on multiple citizenship, asylum and resettlement, the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, legal aid for immigrants and refugees, national security and non-citizens, and business and human rights.

In addition to serving as pro bono counsel, Macklin regularly provides academic guidance in formulating legal positions and drafting facta that form the basis of litigation. In awarding the honour to Macklin, the alumni association noted that her decades-long engagement with evidence-based, human rights compliant policy, public advocacy and education, and strategic litigation exemplify the impact of her contribution beyond academia.
