Kamari Clarke, a distinguished professor at the Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies and the Centre for Diaspora & Transnational Studies in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the UUֱ��, has been recognized with a Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

A legal scholar and anthropologist, Clarke’s career spans more than two decades as an expert in such areas as international justice, religious nationalism, and the politics of globalization and race. Her award-winning research has shown how different legal frameworks, shaped by forces such as neocolonialism, both influence and are influenced by contemporary social movements.

The author and editor of numerous books, Clarke is currently completing a book describing how social movements in the developing world are using modern technologies – such as mobile phones, GPS and others – to challenge the way justice has been traditionally accessed and delivered.

“It’s a recognition of lifetime achievement; It’s a grant to continue to write and to think about the core issues that I’m committed to,” Clarke says. “In many ways, it will map the next 10 years of the contribution that I’ll make to the field.”

Four UUֱ�� scholars – Kamari Clarke, Eugenia Kumacheva, Amira Mittermaier and Kevin Lewis O'Neill – have been awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships.

The Faculty of Arts & Science researchers are among 184 artists, writers, scholars and scientists selected through a rigorous peer-review process from almost 3,000 applicants this year.

“Congratulations to Professors Clarke, Kumacheva, Mittermaier and O’Neill on this prestigious honour,” said Melanie Woodin, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. “We are thrilled that four members of our faculty are receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship. This is an incredible career achievement for a scholar, and it will allow them each to continue their important work in their respective areas of focus.”

The 2021 Guggenheim Fellows:

A distinguished professor at the Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies and the Centre for Diaspora & Transnational Studies, Clarke conducts research on issues related to legal institutions, international legal domains, religious nationalism and the politics of globalization and race. Her books include Fictions of Justice: The International Criminal Court and the Challenge of Legal Pluralism in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Three UUֱ�� scholars – David Dyzenhaus, Anna Shternshis and Douglas W. Stephan – are among the recipients of this year’s prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships.

“Congratulations to Professors Dyzenhaus, Shternshis and Stephan,” said Melanie Woodin, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. “Receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship is one of the great career achievements for a researcher and these three stellar scholars could not be more deserving of this prestigious recognition.”

Dyzenhaus is a University Professor of law and philosophy, whose academic career has been devoted to the study of how law can at one and the same time be a tool of oppression and emancipation. He joined the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts & Science in 1990 and is the recipient of numerous awards and honours including a Fellowship from the Royal Society of Canada.
