It is named for <strong>Clara Cynthia Benson</strong>, one of the first two women to earn a doctorate from UUֱ and <a href="https://magazine.utoronto.ca/campus/history/history-of-women-at-u-of-t/">one of the university’s first two female professors</a>.</p> <p>Murphy is a leading atmospheric chemist studying atmospheric reactive nitrogen species. Her hypothesis that emissions from sea bird colonies are the dominant source of ammonia to the Arctic atmosphere led her to perform the first high-quality ammonia measurements in the Arctic, onboard a Canadian icebreaker.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“While my career has been much smoother sailing than Benson’s, there are still structural and social factors posing challenges to the equitable participation of many individuals in chemistry,” Murphy said. "One lesson I take from Clara Benson’s legacy is that sustained advocacy is needed to continue on a trajectory to a more inclusive future.”</p> <h3><a href="https://www.chemistry.utoronto.ca/news/jennifer-murphy-receives-2024-csc-clara-benson-award%C2%A0">Read the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science story</a></h3> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-source field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">FAS</div> <div class="field field--name-field-top-story-hub-page- field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Top Story (Hub page)</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 13 Feb 2024 17:15:07 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 306090 at Aaron Wheeler recognized with Chemical Institute of Canada’s Ricardo Aroca Award /celebrates/aaron-wheeler-recognized-chemical-institute-canada-s-ricardo-aroca-award <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Aaron Wheeler recognized with Chemical Institute of Canada’s Ricardo Aroca Award</span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-type/research-innovation" hreflang="en">Research &amp; Innovation</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-02-05T13:49:53-05:00" title="Monday, February 5, 2024 - 13:49" class="datetime">Mon, 02/05/2024 - 13:49</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-people/faculty" hreflang="en">Faculty</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-campus field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-campus/st-george" hreflang="en">St. George</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/department-chemistry" hreflang="en">Department of Chemistry</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/donnelly-centre-cellular-biomolecular-research" hreflang="en">Donnelly Centre for Cellular &amp; Biomolecular Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/institute-biomedical-engineering-0" hreflang="en">Institute of Biomedical Engineering</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image-orientation field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field__item">landscape</div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-02/aaron_wheeler_4to3-e1607470832203-crop.jpg" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p><em>Professor Aaron Wheeler (photo courtesy of NSERC)</em></p> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><strong>Aaron Wheeler</strong>, a professor in the department of chemistry in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering, has received the Chemical Institute of Canada’s <a href="https://www.cheminst.ca/awards/csc/arcoca/">Ricardo Aroca Award</a>.</p> <p>The award is given to scientists in recognition of distinguished contributions to the field of analytical chemistry while working in Canada. Wheeler, who is cross-appointed to the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, was honoured for his achievements in the field of microfluidics.</p> <p>Wheeler’s lab has developed microfluidic tools to analyze the chemistry of complex biological samples. She has designed and developed soft materials for use in an extraordinarily broad range of areas, including telecommunications, security, data storage, drug delivery, anti-cancer therapies and tissue engineering.</p> <p>A native of Ukraine, Kumacheva’s stellar career is notable for the number of areas in which she has made major contributions, including chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering. Her many prior awards include: the Order of Canada, the L'Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science, the International Chorafas Foundation Award in Physics and Engineering; the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Research Award; the de Gennes Prize; and the Guggenheim Fellowship.</p> <p>"I am delighted to be a recipient of this award not only because this is the recognition of my research accomplishments, but also because Henry Marshall Tory was an outstanding person,” Kumacheva says. “The legacy that he left was well beyond being a distinguished scientist. His commitment to spreading scientific knowledge and international goodwill had a huge impact on the state of science and education in Canada."</p> <h4><a href="https://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/news/eugenia-kumacheva-awarded-henry-marshall-tory-medal-royal-society-canada">Read the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science story</a></h4> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-source field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">UTC</div> <div class="field field--name-field-top-story-hub-page- field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Top Story (Hub page)</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-add-new-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Add new tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/henry-marshall-tory-medal" hreflang="en">Henry Marshall Tory Medal</a></div> </div> </div> Tue, 12 Sep 2023 21:41:47 +0000 lanthierj 302882 at R.J.
