Astrophysicist Diana Valencia has received a 2023 Guggenheim Fellowship for her research on what makes up planets.

An associate professor in the department of physical and environmental sciences at the UUֱ�� Scarborough, Valencia was among the 171 fellows honoured with the prestigious award in April.

About 3,000 researchers, scholars and artists apply for the award each year. Valencia was the only winner in the category Astronomy – Astrophysics.

“I am a woman of colour and the UUֱ�� Scarborough campus is so diverse that I want to showcase that. I want to show this is something that people from all walks of careers and life can achieve,” Valencia says.

Working with multiple teams, Valencia is leading the analysis of first-of-its-kind data: measurements of low-mass exoplanets and stars that are precise and consistent enough to explore the connection between the composition of stars and planets.

The study showcases her multidisciplinary approach, combining geophysics with astrophysics, that has distinguished her as a leader in the field.

The UUֱ��’s Yong-Baek Kim, Yanqin Wu and John Zilcosky have been recognized with prestigious 2022 Guggenheim Fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

All are professors in the Faculty of Arts & Science. Kim is a professor in the department of physics and the director of the Centre for Quantum Materials; Wu is a professor of theoretical astrophysics in the David A. Dunlap department of astronomy and astrophysics and Zilcosky is a professor in the department of Germanic languages and literatures and the Centre for Comparative Literature.

“When honours like the Guggenheim Fellowships are awarded to multiple Faculty scholars, I am always impressed and fascinated by the diverse disciplines of the winners,” says Dean Melanie Woodin. “This year’s cohort is no exception. I am very happy that the fellowships will allow each to pursue their exciting and important work, and I congratulate them all.”

Leah Cowen, UUֱ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives, congratulated the researchers on being among the 180 recipients of the fellowships – out of 2500 applicants.

“These fellowships will help support important work,” Cowen says, “from research into the proto-planetary disks of gas and dust around newly developing stars, to work on theoretical quantum condensed matter physics and a new book on the cultural history of wrestling.”

Four UUֱ�� scholars – Kamari Clarke, Eugenia Kumacheva, Amira Mittermaier and Kevin Lewis O'Neill – have been awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships.

The Faculty of Arts & Science researchers are among 184 artists, writers, scholars and scientists selected through a rigorous peer-review process from almost 3,000 applicants this year.

“Congratulations to Professors Clarke, Kumacheva, Mittermaier and O’Neill on this prestigious honour,” said Melanie Woodin, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. “We are thrilled that four members of our faculty are receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship. This is an incredible career achievement for a scholar, and it will allow them each to continue their important work in their respective areas of focus.”

The 2021 Guggenheim Fellows:

A distinguished professor at the Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies and the Centre for Diaspora & Transnational Studies, Clarke conducts research on issues related to legal institutions, international legal domains, religious nationalism and the politics of globalization and race. Her books include Fictions of Justice: The International Criminal Court and the Challenge of Legal Pluralism in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Anna Shternshis, a scholar of Yiddish and Russian Jewish history and culture, has been awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.

It’s one of the world’s most distinguished honours for mid-career academics who have produced groundbreaking scholarly work and continue to show exceptional promise for future research.

The author of two books and dozens of articles on Soviet Jewish experience, Shternshis is the Al and Malka Green Professor of Yiddish studies in the Faculty of Arts & Science. Her award-winning work on Jewish history and popular culture is academically influential and impactful to a wide audience. In 2018, she created the Grammy-nominated Yiddish Glory project, which excavated and revived forgotten Yiddish music written during the Holocaust in the Soviet Union. The Guggenheim Fellowship will support her work on a book on this topic.

“My work focuses on giving voices to Jewish women and children who created Yiddish songs documenting their lives in Nazi ghettos during the Holocaust,” says Shternshis. “Getting the Guggenheim Fellowship to work on this project in the midst of today's crisis feels strangely hopeful because I strongly believe that knowing suffering, heroism, resilience, and yes, the music of the past, gives us strength for the present and the future.”

University Professor Douglas W. Stephan, a global leader in the field of inorganic chemistry and catalysis — the acceleration of chemical reactions – has been awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.

It’s one of the world’s most distinguished honours for mid-career academics who have produced groundbreaking scholarly work and continue to show exceptional promise for future research.

“It is a terrific honour to be considered among this diverse and select group of artists, scholars and scientists,” Stephan says. “This recognition is a tribute to the graduate students, undergraduates and postdoctoral fellows that have worked in my group over the years.

“I am grateful to them as well as my collaborators and colleagues.”

The author of more than 500 scientific articles, Stephan has been designated a “highly cited researcher” for the past six years by the Institute for Scientific Information, indicating that his papers rank in the top one per cent of citations in the field. He joined the department of chemistry in the Faculty of Arts & Science at UUֱ�� in 2008 as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair and has received many national and international awards, including Humboldt and Killam Fellowships and was the recipient of the 2019 J. C. Polanyi Award from NSERC of Canada.

David Dyzenhaus, a University Professor of law and of philosophy, has been awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.

It’s one of the world’s most distinguished honours for mid-career academics who have produced groundbreaking scholarly work and continue to show exceptional promise for future research.

Dyzenhaus, who joined UUֱ��’s Faculty of Law and Faculty of Arts & Science in 1990, grew up in South Africa during apartheid. His academic career has been devoted to the study of how law can simultaneously be a tool of oppression and emancipation. His research examines the practical implications of political and legal philosophy in scenarios such as conflict, occupation, states of emergency and transitional justice.

Dyzenhaus has published four books, edited or co-edited 12 collections of essays and authored more than 100 academic articles. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honours including a Fellowship from the Royal Society of Canada.

“The Guggenheim Fellowship will provide me with the time to research properly my topic and to discipline my thoughts into written form,” says Dyzenhaus, “perhaps to the point where I will have a book ready for publication the following year.”
