Global Educator Award

Amy Bilton, an associate professor with the department of mechanical and industrial engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and director of the Centre for Global Engineering, has received the UUֱ�� Global Educator Award for 2023.

The award recognizes faculty members who embody UUֱ��’s global mission and whose approach to teaching demonstrates intercultural or global fluency – the ability to successfully operate and communicate within different cultural contexts.

“Professor Bilton has provided students with innovative curricular and co-curricular opportunities that have developed their engineering skills in a global context,” says Alexie Tcheuyap, associate vice-president and vice-provost, international student experience, and chair of this year's selection committee.

“I would like to personally thank Amy for empowering UUֱ�� students with experiences to work confidently across cultures and be a positive influence in the world.”

Bilton, who will be honoured at the university’s annual Excellence in Teaching Reception in the fall, “has built an impressive range of partnerships and collaborations that stretch all the way around the world,” says Christopher Yip, dean of UUֱ�� Engineering.

“These projects are incredibly valuable for both the students and the communities they work with, and form an important part of our vibrant global network. On behalf of the Faculty, my warmest congratulations to her on this well-deserved honour.”

Three professors in the UUֱ��’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering have been recognized by the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) for their distinguished contributions to engineering.

Professor Michael Carter of the department of mechanical and industrial engineering (MIE) has received the Julian C. Smith Medal for “achievement in the development of Canada,” while Professors Natalie Enright Jerger of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering and Xinyu Liu (MIE) have been elected fellows for “excellence in engineering and services to the profession and to society.”

The founder of UUֱ��’s Centre for Healthcare Engineering, Carter is a recognized leader in systems engineering approaches to health care, influencing health policy and practice across Canada through his leadership positions, educational initiatives and work with health-care organizations. The tools he has created are used by government and health-care organizations throughout the country.

Enright Jerger, the Canada Research Chair in Computer Architecture, designs new ways of arranging the components of computer processors to optimize performance, helping manufacturers like Intel, AMD and Qualcomm build faster devices while keeping power usage and costs low.

Liu is internationally recognized for his innovative contributions in paper-based microfluidics, microrobotics, and flexible/stretchable sensors, with applications in disease diagnostics and treatment, basic biology research and wearable electronics.

The UUֱ�� has announced the winners of the 2022 Awards of Excellence, a prestigious program presented annually in collaboration with the UUֱ�� Alumni Association to recognize outstanding faculty, librarians, staff and students.

The Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering's Aimy Bazylak, Vaughn Betz and Frank Vecchio have been elected 2022 Fellows of the Engineering Institute of Canada for “excellence in engineering and services to the profession and to society.”

“On behalf of the Faculty, my warmest congratulations to Professors Bazylak, Betz and Vecchio,” says UUֱ�� Engineering Dean Christopher Yip. “Their outstanding contributions illustrate some of the key areas in which UUֱ�� Engineers are making an impact across disciplines and sectors.”

A professor with the department of mechanical and industrial engineering, Bazylak holds the Canada Research Chair for Thermofluidics in Clean Energy and is working to advance fuel cells, electrolyzers and batteries for clean power production and energy storage without greenhouse gas emissions. Her research is focused on the use of modelling and real-time imaging to design new materials for high efficiency and performance.

Betz, a professor with the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering, holds the NSERC/Intel Industrial Research Chair in Programmable Silicon. His work has revolutionized the use of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), to allow engineers to rapidly create new hardware systems and realize their design visions.

Vecchio, a professor emeritus with the department of civil and mineral engineering, is the former Bahen/Tanenbaum Chair in Civil Engineering. An internationally respected authority on the behaviour of concrete structures, he has contributed substantially to increasing the safety and reliability of Canada’s infrastructure. Vecchio is the co-developer of the Modified Compression Field Theory, a groundbreaking conceptual model for describing the behaviour of reinforced concrete under general load conditions, which has been incorporated into design codes in Canada and internationally.

Four UUֱ�� professors from the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering are being recognized with a Synergy Award for Innovation from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for their longstanding partnership with Hitachi High-Tech Canada (HTC).

The award was presented to Professor Yu Sun today. Key principal investigators from UUֱ�� Engineering involved in the collaboration also include Professors Jane Howe, Tobin Filleter and Doug Perovic.

Focused on nanoscale electron microscopy and robotics, the collaboration between UUֱ�� and HTC has strengthened the Ontario Centre for the Characterization of Advanced Materials (OCCAM), a unique facility that contains leading-edge equipment for imaging, analyzing and manipulating materials with nanometre-scale precision. It has led to numerous scientific discoveries and commercialized products – including the TNI LifeForce nanomanipulation system, which enables samples to be manipulated with extreme precision while inside a scanning electron microscope. LifeForce was licensed to HTC and is commercialized worldwide.

“When I first started working with Professor Sun, I quickly realised that he has only two modes of operation on and on even more!” says Ian Cotton, a board member and former President at HTC. “His lab is like an Aladdin’s cave of engineering, which led to one of the best product concepts we have ever delivered. The results speak for themselves: an elegant design with flawless execution.”

Four UUֱ�� researchers are receiving the Connaught Global Challenge Award, supporting projects that explore everything from student mental health to the impact of health care on climate, access to COVID-19 vaccines and energy harvesting technologies for biomedical applications.

“The Connaught Global Challenge Award recognizes leading researchers who are working across disciplines with colleagues, students and thought leaders, making significant contributions to society by advancing knowledge and developing innovative solutions to some of the world's most complex challenges,” says Professor Alex Mihailidis, associate vice-president, international partnerships.

“I'm delighted that this year's winners include the first recipients of the Connaught Global Research Impact Program (C-GRIP) award, funded by Office of the Vice-President International to provide graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with unique global opportunities by supporting global mobility and exchange.”

The Connaught Global Challenge is supported by the Connaught Fund – the largest, internal university research funding program in Canada. Established in 1972 through the sale of the Connaught Medical Research Laboratories, the fund has provided nearly $170 million to UUֱ�� scholars through a range of programs including the Connaught New Researcher Award, the Connaught Community Partnerships Research Program, the Connaught Innovation Award, the McLean Award and international doctoral scholarships.

Craig Simmons of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering has been inducted as Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society in recognition of his innovative and wide-ranging contributions to fundamental science and practical applications in the field of mechanobiology.

A professor in the department of mechanical and industrial engineering and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Simmons has published more than 135 peer-reviewed research articles in high-impact journals that have received close to 12,000 citations. He is the Canada Research Chair in Mechanobiology and the author of the textbook Introductory Biomechanics: From cells to organisms. He has four patents and eight invention disclosures under his name.

“Congratulations to Craig Simmons,” said Professor Markus Bussmann, chair of the department. “This award recognizes the impact of the work he’s done and will continue to do, and his place among the very best in his field.”

Being named a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society is the latest in a series of honours for Simmons that includes the Ontario Early Researcher Award; the McCharles Prize; the McLean Award, Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering; and the Heart and Stroke Foundation CP Has Heart Award.

“It is wonderful to see Dr. Simmons continue to receive accolades for his research and teaching,” said Professor Warren Chan, director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering.

Two UUֱ�� Engineering professors and three alumni have been honoured by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) and Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) with Ontario Professional Engineers Awards.

The awards recognize professional engineers in Ontario who have made outstanding contributions to the profession and to society.

Professor Baher Abdulhai of the department of civil and mineral engineering won the Engineering Excellence medal, recognizing overall excellence in the practice of engineering. Professor Eric Diller of the department of mechanical and industrial engineering won the Young Engineer Medal, for an early-career engineer who has demonstrated professional excellence as well as service to the community.

Alumnus Hugo Blasutta received the Management Medal, for innovative management contributing significantly to an engineering achievement and alumnus Peter Halsall won the Gold Medal, recognizing public service, technical excellence, and outstanding professional leadership. Alumna Sandra Odendahl received the Citizenship Award, given to an engineer who has made significant volunteer contributions to the community.

“These recipients illustrate the amazing depth and breadth of the contributions being made by UUֱ�� engineers, spanning research, management, entrepreneurship, professional leadership, and service to the profession and to the community,” said UUֱ�� Engineering Dean Christopher Yip. “On behalf of the Faculty, my warmest congratulations to these outstanding engineering faculty and alumni on this well-deserved recognition.”
