Fourteen researchers at the UUֱ�� are receiving 2023-24 Connaught Innovation Awards to help accelerate the development and commercialization of technologies with high potential to have a positive impact on society.

“I would like to congratulate this year’s recipients of Connaught Innovation Awards, whose research is fostering solutions to some of the most pressing challenges of our time,” said Leah Cowen, UUֱ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “From harnessing machine learning to improve interpretation of lung function tests to developing low-cost and scalable methods to monitor methane at landfills, these scholars are advancing novel ways to utilize technology to have a transformative impact in areas of critical importance in Canada and around the world.”

This year’s recipients are:

The Connaught Innovation Award, which provides one-time seed funding to support the development and commercialization of the researchers’ innovative technologies, is backed by the Connaught Fund – the largest internal university research funding program in Canada. Established 52 years ago through the sale of Connaught Medical Research Laboratories, which is known for the discovery and production of insulin, the fund supports UUֱ�� scholars through programs such as the New Researcher Award, Community Partnership Research Program, Major Research Challenge for Black Researchers, McLean Award and international doctoral scholarships.

Five UUֱ�� researchers have received President’s Impact Awards for their important work in AI governance, environmental justice, genomics policy, nutritional sciences and quantum computing.

The awards celebrate and honour faculty members whose research has led to a significant impact beyond academia. Laureates are designated as members of the President’s Impact Academy, and receive a monetary award of $10,000 per year for five years to be used toward their research.

“I would like to congratulate the winners of this year’s President’s Impact Awards for their outstanding work in tackling some of the biggest challenges of our time,” said Barbara Fallon, UUֱ��'s associate vice-president, research.

“From informing and improving dietary choices to fostering greater alignment between environmental justice and Indigenous communities, these scholars are generating knowledge and ideas that stand to have a tremendous impact beyond academia.

“Their exceptional contributions speak to the important role that UUֱ�� researchers play in improving lives in Canada and around the world.”

This year’s winners are:

Gillian Hadfield, professor in the Faculty of Law and Rotman School of Management, “for contributions impacting access to justice, innovative design for legal and dispute resolution systems in advanced and developing market economies, and governance for artificial intelligence.”

M. Murphy, professor in the Women & Gender Studies Institute and department of history in the Faculty of Arts & Science, “for contributions that consistently move environmental justice research along a collaborative trajectory with Indigenous communities, data practices, and policy-making.”

Yvonne Bombard, scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto and associate professor in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, “for her significant contributions in enacting national law against genetic discrimination, improving healthcare options for Canadians, and advancing clinical practice and genomics research.”

Alán Aspuru-Guzik, professor in the department of chemistry and department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science, “for his pioneering work in the fields of artificial intelligence and quantum computing for materials discovery.”

David Jenkins, University Professor in the department of nutritional sciences at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, “for his studies on the health effects of food that have changed how the world makes healthy dietary choices.”

Twenty faculty members from the UUֱ�� have been awarded Canada Research Chairs in support of their research in areas ranging from LGBTQ2S+ youth mental health to quantum photonic technologies and sustainable suburban housing.

Awarded by the Government of Canada, Canada Research Chair positions are designed to reinforce academic research and training excellence with a view to improving depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthening Canada’s international competitiveness and helping train the next generation of highly skilled people.

Yue Li and Gordon D. Richardson are among the recipients of the 2023 Distinguished Contributions to Accounting Literature Award from the American Accounting Association (AAA), the largest accounting association in the world.

Two influential publications that Li and Richardson co-wrote contributed to their AAA win, including a 2008 study on the relationship between environmental performance and disclosure – cited more than 1,700 times in other academic papers – and their 2011 research on the determinants and consequences of proactive environmental strategies.

“I'm very humbled and honoured to receive this award alongside my co-authors. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and passion I have for environmental accounting research,” said Li, a professor of accounting at the Institute for Management & Innovation, with a cross-appointment at the Rotman School of Management.

Li, director of the master of management and professional accounting program at UUֱ�� Mississauga, studies the relationship between firms that voluntarily disclose their environmental strategies and their performance – both environmental and financial. He focuses on corporate environmental performance, corporate social responsibility and sustainability management.

Richardson, a professor of accounting at the Rotman School of Management, is a capital markets researcher who has published numerous studies related to environmental accounting involving greenhouse gases and corporate social responsibility. He specializes in accounting-based valuation models and the value relevance for investors of financial statements. In 2022, Richardson was inducted into the Canadian Accounting Hall of Fame.

The AAA award, presented in the form of unique glass art pieces and a $2,500 prize, will be given to Li, Richardson and their two co-authors at the 2023 AAA Annual Meeting next month in Denver, Colo.

Two UUֱ�� faculty members are being recognized with awards from the Bank of Canada for their research and expertise in areas important to the bank’s core functions.

Liyan Yang, a professor of finance at the Rotman School of Management, has been honoured with the 2023 Bank of Canada Fellowship Award.

Yang, who holds the Peter L. Mitchelson/SIT Investment Associates Foundation Chair in Investment Strategy at the Rotman School, is an internationally acclaimed scholar with expertise in financial markets, institutions and behavioural finance. His research proposes a coherent framework – both theoretical and empirical – for understanding how investors interact in financial markets and their effect on regulatory policy and the overall welfare of the economy.

A record 17 UUֱ�� faculty members are being recognized with the President’s Impact Award for the significant impact of their research across Canada and beyond.

Ajay Agrawal of the Rotman School of Management, George Dei of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, Ito Peng of the Faculty of Arts & Science and Yu Sun of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering are each receiving individual awards.

A team award, meanwhile, recognizes 13 leaders of Ontario’s COVID-19 Science Advisory Table from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Faculty of Arts & Science, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, many of whom also hold appointments across UUֱ��'s hospital partner network at Baycrest Health Sciences Centre, Hospital for Sick Children, Sinai Health System, Unity Health, University Health Network and Women’s College Hospital. They are: Upton Allen, Karen Born, Adalsteinn Brown, Peter Jüni, Linda Mah, Andrew Morris, Kumar Murty, Fahad Razak, Paula Rochon, Beate Sander, Brian Schwartz, Nathan Stall and Robert Steiner.

Each winner is designated a member of the President’s Impact Academy, which advocates for sustained excellence in research and innovation impact within and outside the university.

“These awards represent how UUֱ��’s research community is coming together tackle some of today’s toughest problems and making breakthroughs that result in real-world change,” says Leah Cowen, UUֱ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

Entrepreneurs behind two startups that got off the ground at UUֱ��, and an alumna who launched a frozen food startup while working on her master's degree are among the young up-and-comers on Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

Erthos co-founders Nuha Siddiqui and Kritika Tyagi were recognized in the social impact category, while Argentum Electronics co-founder and chief technology officer Sagar Jaiswal was recognized as a rising talent in manufacturing and industry. PuraVida Foods founder and CEO Lauren Watkins was recognized in the Food & Drink category.

Siddiqui and Tyagi started Erthos, formerly known as EcoPackers, while studying at UUֱ��. The plant-based plastics venture received early support from UUֱ��’s entrepreneurship community, including Creative Destruction Lab at the Rotman School of Management. Founded in 2018, the company has raised US$5.5 million in funding and is bringing in six figures in annual revenue, Forbes reports.

UUֱ�� Engineering alum Jaiswal shared a spot on the list with Argentum Electronics co-founder and president Bolis Ibrahim. The Ontario-based company, which changes the way electricity is distributed in buildings from AC to DC to reduce energy consumption, was boosted by the Impact Centre’s Techno2018 entrepreneurship program. Its patented DC power distribution system can cut a building’s electricity costs by 40 per cent. The company has raised $1.1 million, per Forbes.

Watkins, who earned a master's degree in human resources and industrial relations in 2021, launched PuraVida in 2020. The company's ethically sourced, nutrient-rich frozen foods are sold in roughly 1,000 stores in the U.S., Forbes reported.

The annual Forbes 30 Under 30 list spotlights hundreds of leaders across an array of industries who have made a mark in their fields before their 30^th birthday.

Sarah Kaplan, a professor of strategic management at the UUֱ��’s Rotman School of Management has been recognized with the Peter Dey Governance Achievement Award from The Governance Professionals of Canada (GPC).

The honour recognizes an individual who has positively affected governance and contributed to transforming the way that Canadian companies are governed.

A Distinguished Professor of gender and the economy, Kaplan is also director of the Institute for Gender and the Economy, which aims to promote an understanding of gender inequalities and how they can be remedied in the economy and in the world of business.

A fellow of the Michael Lee-Chin Family Institute for Corporate Citizenship at the Rotman School, Kaplan offers her governance insights at governance associations, academic institutions, corporations, and law firms, and has written a series of leading articles and management pieces on thought-provoking matters in governance. Earlier this year, she co-authored the report, “360º Governance: Where are the Directors in a World in Crisis?,” which highlighted 13 recommendations for Canadian corporate governance reform.

Kaplan “sends a strong signal to the community that governance can be advanced and improved in many ways and through many perspectives,” the judges wrote. “She continues to transform the way Canadian companies are and will be governed.”

Ajay Agrawal, a professor of strategic management at the UUֱ��’s Rotman School of Management and the founder of the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL), has received an honorary degree from the University of Calgary.

The honorary degree is the University of Calgary’s highest academic honour, bestowed upon individuals whose notable achievements and community service merit recognition.

“A visionary leader and educator, Agrawal has transformed the Canadian entrepreneurial ecosystem, empowering students and aspiring business owners to pursue their dreams,” the university said in a statement.

In founding the CDL, the university said, he revolutionized the way public and private sectors interact.

The CDL enables investors, mentors and researchers to collaborate and build scalable companies, helping students to action their ideas. Agrawal founded it at the Rotman School in 2012 and it has since expanded to sites at five Canadian and five international universities. In 2017, the University of Calgary partnered with UUֱ�� to launch CDL-Rockies.

Agrawal holds the Geoffrey Taber Chair in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and is a co-founder of Next Canada, a not-for-profit organization that delivers three programs, The Next 36, Next AI, and Next Founders, to support the training and personal development of young entrepreneurs.

Professor Joshua Gans of the UUֱ��’s Rotman School of Management has been honoured for his innovative approach to entrepreneurship pedagogy by the Academy of Management.

Gans, the Jeffrey S. Skoll Chair in Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship, was a co-winner of the Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy Award with Erin Scott and Scott Stern of the MIT Sloan School of Management, at the recent Academy of Management conference.

The award is presented by the Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division and Yeshiva University for the development and implementation of an innovation in entrepreneurship pedagogy for either graduate or undergraduate education.

Gans, Scott and Stern developed “Entrepreneurial Strategy,” a practical and systematic approach for how to undertake the process of exploring and evaluating the core choices that entrepreneurs need to make as they translate their ideas into a reality. This approach is taught at the Rotman School in both the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) Introduction and CDL Advanced courses.
