Susan Chatwood, an associate professor at UUֱ��’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, has received the Governor General’s 2019 Polar Medal for a lifetime of work on public health in the Arctic. Her work has focused on improving access to culturally appropriate care.

Chatwood says understanding Indigenous perspectives about health means looking at wellness holistically. It means not only treating diabetes, but also looking at food security and asking, for example, if the caribou decline has affected community health. At an international level, Chatwood also shares research and information related to climate change and public health among the eight Arctic states.

Bryan Gaensler, the director of the UUֱ��’s Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics, has been honoured with the 2019 Peter G. Martin Award for Mid-Career Achievement by the Canadian Astronomical Society (CASCA).

The annual award recognizes Canadian astronomers or astronomers working in Canada who have made significant contributions to astronomical research. Winners are usually within 10 to 20 years of receiving their PhD.

Gaensler is a leading expert in cosmic magnetism, supernova explosions and interstellar gas. He has produced more than 360 publications with 16,000 citations.

CASCA named Gaensler the winner at the organization’s annual general meeting at McGill University on June 19.

Two UUֱ�� faculty members have been named Chevalier (knight) dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques – an honour granted to those who have made major contributions to French education and culture.

Ron Levi and Paul Cohen received France’s oldest non-military decoration at a ceremony at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy from Marc Trouyet, France’s consul general. The title was created by Napoleon I in 1808, becoming a decoration in 1866 under Napoleon III.

“It is indeed a privilege to honour two such distinguished professors for their ability to liaise to and with France, its history and society,” said Trouyet.

Levi is an associate professor of global affairs and sociology, the director of global strategy at the Munk School and the George Ignatieff Chair of Peace and Conflict Studies. Cohen is an associate professor of history who helped to launch the Centre for the Study of France and the Francophone World in the Munk School, where he was director until 2017.
