University Chief Librarian Larry P. Alford has been recognized with the prestigious Ron MacDonald Distinguished Service Award from colleagues at the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN).

“UUֱ�� is extremely fortunate to have Larry Alford at the helm of our world-class library system. He keenly recognizes the vital role that libraries play in student success and research excellence,” said UUֱ�� Vice-President and Provost Cheryl Regehr. “Larry has been a key contributor to our university's research enterprise. He is constantly working to evolve our libraries, expanding access to research and building crucial partnerships throughout the university community.”

Alford assumed the role of university chief librarian in 2011 and has been a vital leader in the Canadian research library community, working to build strong and resilient digital research and scholarly communications infrastructure to benefit not only UUֱ�� but research libraries across Canada.

“Libraries are continually reinventing themselves as content becomes more accessible online,” Alford said. “We play an essential role in enhancing access and preservation, building connections, and reinforcing why research matters. 

“It is a privilege to collaborate with colleagues at CRKN and at UUֱ�� to lead change and evolve as society evolves.”

In its citation, the CRKN said that, alongside all his career accomplishments, those who have worked with Mr. Alford describe him as generous, enthusiastic and empathetic. They noted that he is committed to equity, passionate about inspiring students, supporting faculty, mentoring staff and collaborating with colleagues.

The UUֱ�� has announced the winners of the 2022 Awards of Excellence, a prestigious program presented annually in collaboration with the UUֱ�� Alumni Association to recognize outstanding faculty, librarians, staff and students.

“This year's honourees represent the incredible breadth and depth of excellence found across our three campuses,” President Meric Gertler said in his address to the winners. “They are being recognized for their dedication to others and to our collective success, as well as for their own outstanding accomplishments.

Nearly 800 faculty members, staff and librarians from across the UUֱ�� recognized their colleagues with True Blue citations in the first quarter of the fiscal year – for their outstanding contributions to service, leadership, innovation, citizenship, collaboration and commitment to equity.

In all, 59 people received a True Blue award from May through July. Winners included:

For his national and international contributions to research librarianship, University Chief Librarian Larry Alford has been honoured with the CARL Award for Distinguished Service to Research Librarianship from the Canadian Association of Research Libraries.

“Larry leads the UUֱ�� Libraries with skill, balancing tradition with innovation and transformation, leveraging an approach of evolution rather than revolution,” said Leslie Weir, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. “He is a leader that encourages risk taking, developing a culture of innovation and creativity.”

A former president of the Association of Research Libraries, Alford is a mentor and champion of the Toronto Academic Library interns program. He received the 2018 American Library Association’s Hugh Atkinson Memorial Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Information and Library Science and SILS Alumni Association at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

At UUֱ��, Alford has championed a wide range of innovative initiatives and new approaches to public service and outreach – and has invested in capital projects to improve the student experience through the revitalization of library spaces.

“I am deeply honoured to be the recipient of this award.” Alford said. “It has been a privilege to work with my extraordinary UUֱ�� and Canadian colleagues on issues that are critical to the future of research libraries, such as research data management, digital preservation, supporting new forms of digital scholarship, copyright transformation, open access, open data, open science, and preservation of our print collections.”

For her commitment to the student experience, spirit of service and willingness to go above and beyond, librarian Lari Langford has received the Northrop Frye Staff Award.

The honour is one of the Awards of Excellence presented by the UUֱ�� Alumni Association in collaboration with the university. The prestigious program dates back to 1921 and recognizes outstanding faculty, staff and students.

In her 40-year career, Langford has excelled in a wide range of library positions across campus. Now head of user services at Robarts Library, she has overseen such innovations as the TCard, which revolutionized student identification and access to services. She is also an advocate for students’ accessibility needs, helping to establish the Accessible Content ePortal (ACE), which has grown into a province-wide repository of accessible-format texts that supports students with print disabilities.

Since the onset of COVID-19, Langford has worked tirelessly on students’ behalf. She was instrumental in establishing curbside pickup – often personally retrieving materials from other campus libraries. Her unit’s contributions to “Ask a Librarian” saw student engagement increase by 60 per cent during the pandemic.

Langford retires in June 2021. In honouring Langford, the alumni association notes that her colleagues praise her as an outstanding librarian, who is deeply valued for her many selfless contributions, her sage input and her high personal standards.

Tegan Ridge is one of six winners of the 2020 Patricia and Peter Shannon Wilson Undergraduate Research Prize.

A Faculty of Arts & Science student in her fourth year St. Michael’s College, Ridge won for her research paper on Othmar Schoeck’s Penthesilea, completed for the course TMU 499Y1: Independent Study.

“Schoeck was Swiss, the libretto for the music drama written in German,” Ridge says. “Consequently, much of the scholarship I uncovered referred to materials held in German-speaking lands.”

With the help of UUֱ�� librarians, Ridge says she was able to reach out to archives abroad and obtain digitized materials.

“Notably, in the existing literature on Schoeck, there is no precedent for the kind of multifaceted study Tegan completed,” says Assistant Professor Daphne Tan, supervisor for the course. “Tegan’s final paper is rich in theoretical and analytical detail, and moreover, due to her keen understanding of an eclectic body of scholarship and the gaps therein, she offers several innovative insights."

The Patricia and Peter Shannon Wilson Undergraduate Research Prize is made possible due to an endowment by Mrs. Patricia Wilson and Mr. Peter Wilson.

Emma Sullivan is one of six winners of the 2020 Patricia and Peter Shannon Wilson Undergraduate Research Prize.

A Faculty of Arts & Science student in her third year at Victoria College, she won for her project on gene editing technologies and Pelizaeus Merzbacher Disease (PMD). Sullivan, who is pursuing a double major in cell and molecular biology and health and disease, completed the project for the course HMB 496: Research Project in Human Biology.

“During the entire project, Emma continuously learnt and updated herself by searching through the scientific literature… Every time she encountered a new challenge, she went back to study what was published on the topic and brought back the possible solutions to the lab,” said course supervisor Eleanora Maino.

Sullivan said the most important thing she learned throughout the process was to ask questions.

“It was such a unique and exciting opportunity to immerse myself in this project as I learned everything from scratch; both about PMD from the existing literature, and how to perform required lab techniques and software manipulations,” said Sullivan.

Kiera Farrell-Beaulieu is one of six winners of the 2020 Patricia and Peter Shannon Wilson Undergraduate Research Prize.

A Faculty of Arts & Science student in her second year at Innis College, Farrell-Beaulieu is a political science major. She won for a research paper on the opioid overdose epidemic among youth in Ottawa.

Farrell-Beaulieu says her experiences growing up in Ottawa inspired her winning paper, which was completed for the course JGI 216: Globalization and Urban Change.

“Winning this prize shows that my research is going in a positive direction that can lead to an attitude shift in society’s treatment of teenage addiction and mental health,” she says. “It also means hope – for me, my classmates, community members, and the parents of those who passed away – that this crisis doesn’t have to be a permanence in our community.”

Instructor Dylan Symone says Farrell-Beaulieu's work was exceptional, noting “her creative efforts in searching, evaluating, and synthesizing information sources across traditional disciplinary boundaries in scholarly research.”

The Patricia and Peter Shannon Wilson Undergraduate Research Prize is made possible due to an endowment by Mrs. Patricia Wilson and Mr. Peter Wilson.

Patricia and Peter Shannon Wilson Undergraduate Research Prize

Braden Zufelt is one of six winners of the 2020 Patricia and Peter Shannon Wilson Undergraduate Research Prize.

A Trinity College student, Zufelt just graduated from the Faculty of Arts & Science with high distinction, having majored in international relations and philosophy. He won for his research project on “the myth of Anglo-French hostility to German reunification,” completed for the course TRN 410: Understanding Contemporary International Relations.

“Prior to my investigation, I had not fully understood the wealth of databases available through the UUֱ�� Libraries, specifically those housing historical newspapers,” Zufelt said. “Noting the availability of these databases has led me to a greater appreciation of libraries not only for the resources they offer, but also for the institutions themselves: libraries are the organizational bedrock of any academic discipline, though perhaps most especially the humanities – which are fundamental to our understanding of the world and each other.”

Professor John M. Dirks, instructor for the course, praised Zufelt’s broad, interdisciplinary range of primary and secondary sources.

“Unquestionably Braden is a brilliant analyst and writer,” Dirks said. “Yet by reading as widely as he did, he is able to put forward this genuinely original interpretation.”
