Alumnus Lorne Michaels, best known as the creator and executive producer of Saturday Night Live, has been recognized by the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts with a 44th Kennedy Centre Honor for lifetime artistic achievement.

The Washington Post reported that U.S. President Joe Biden told Michaels, “If you can’t laugh at yourself, you’re in real trouble. And you make me laugh at myself a lot.”

Michaels graduated from the UUֱ�� in 1966, having served as a writer and director with UC Follies and Hart House Theatre, and launched SNL nine years later. Over the years, the award-winning screenwriter has also produced feature films such as Mean Girls and Wayne’s World and served as executive producer of television shows such as Kids in the Hall, 30 Rock, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Late Night with Seth Meyers among others. He has received more Emmy® nominations than any other individual – 93 so far.

Named a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2018, Michaels was also awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016, a Peabody Award in 2013 and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour in 2004. He received an honorary degree from UUֱ�� in 2002. In a video tribute posted on the Kennedy Centre site before the celebration, musician Paul McCartney congratulated Michaels on this latest honour.

“You’ve done so much in the world of humour, TV, film – the list is endless – so you really deserve this,” McCartney says. “And, more than that, I’d really like to thank you for being such a good friend over all these years. I love you. You’re a good man.”

Nearly 800 faculty members, staff and librarians from across the UUֱ�� recognized their colleagues with True Blue citations in the first quarter of the fiscal year – for their outstanding contributions to service, leadership, innovation, citizenship, collaboration and commitment to equity.

In all, 59 people received a True Blue award from May through July. Winners included:

New College librarian Aneta Kwak, nominated by Kevin Edmonds on behalf of the Caribbean studies program for her support of the 2021 Diaspora Voices conference
Tee Duke, assistant director of Indigenous initiatives at UUֱ�� Mississauga, nominated by Allison Burgess of the Sexual & Gender Diversity Office for supporting the UUֱ�� Pride concert
Warren Bathie, fitness, strength and conditioning associate, nominated by Hart House Warden John Monahan for his inspiring leadership

“UUֱ�� is one of the world’s best universities – and it is the work of our faculty, librarians and staff that make this possible,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Erin Jackson. “It’s important we recognize these contributions as part of our day-to-day practice. Expressing gratitude for our colleagues’ work is an integral part of fostering a culture of appreciation and it makes UUֱ�� an excellent place to work.

“I want to congratulate all of our True Blue Award winners and invite all of our faculty, librarians and staff to use True Blue to recognize their colleagues.”

For their exemplary, decades-long service to the university, Bruce Kidd and Brenda McCabe have received the Vivek Goel Faculty Citizenship Award.

The honour is one of the Awards of Excellence presented by the UUֱ�� Alumni Association in collaboration with the university. The prestigious program dates back to 1921 and recognizes outstanding faculty, staff and students.

An Olympian and professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, Kidd holds a long-standing career at UUֱ�� that includes serving as dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Health, warden of Hart House, and vice-president and principal of UUֱ�� Scarborough. In honouring Kidd, the alumni association noted that during his 50 years of service, he has created a transformative learning environment on campus, while serving as the university’s humans rights ambassador to the world.

McCabe is a professor in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. In 2008, she was appointed chair of the department of civil engineering – the first woman to chair any department at UUֱ�� Engineering. To mark the occasion, she created five new scholarships, named after the first five women to graduate from the department. In honouring McCabe, the alumni association noted that throughout her career, she’s championed the student experience, represented the engineering profession with high distinction, and advanced environmental sustainability

UUֱ�� students, staff and faculty have been honoured with 2020 IDERD Impact Awards for their leadership and innovation in working towards the elimination of racism and the advancement of anti-racism.

The awards were announced at UUֱ��’s fifth annual International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) conference.

Entisar Yusuf received the student leadership award (individual) in recognition of her work founding and leading the Black Graduate Students Association and her thesis research on Black graduate students navigating higher education.

“Anti-racism in action is building awareness and changing attitudes to provide universal equitable access,” Yusuf said.

For her ability to create engaging opportunities for students and for her generous and enthusiastic mentorship, Zoe Dille has received the Jill Matus Excellence in Student Services Award.

The honour is one of the Awards of Excellence presented by the UUֱ�� Alumni Association in collaboration with the university.

Dille is the senior coordinator of integrated learning and community engagement at Hart House. The alumni association noted she has helped thousands of UUֱ�� students feel included and engaged in the campus community through opportunities to explore leadership, nurture wellness, engage in social justice and realize equality. Dille has helped organize such inclusive and empowering student programs as the annual Hart House Hancock Lecture series, the Hart House Good Ideas Fund, the hip hop education initiative and the Black futures series, among others.

Dille acts in an advisory capacity for Hart House’s social justice committee and the Hart House music committee. In addition to supporting hundreds of arts-centred student groups, she has collaborated with other university divisions on events for Indigenous Week and the SOAR Aboriginal Youth Gathering during March Break.

Through her many different roles at the UUֱ��, Janelle Joseph has contributed to community dialogue, healthy living and student life – and has been recognized with the Chancellor’s Award (Emerging Leader).

The lecturer in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education created an undergraduate elective course on race and Indigeneity, and advocated for faculty and staff training on unconscious racial bias.

Joseph is known for her expertise in anti-Black racism, Indigeneity and inequity, and has written three books on race and sport in Canada.

She’s also the director of academic success in the division of Student Life and assistant director of the transitional year programme, a bridging program to help adults earn the credits they need for university. Joseph leads the Teaching & Learning Strategist Community of Practice in the Faculty of Arts & Science and chairs the board of stewards for Hart House.

“All of us have to become a little bit uncomfortable, because complacency allows the status quo to continue,” she told UUֱ�� News. “We all have to challenge our assumptions and try to think differently.”
