The UUֱ�� has announced the winners of the 2024 Awards of Excellence, a prestigious program presented annually in collaboration with the UUֱ�� Alumni Association (UTAA) to recognize outstanding and inspiring faculty, staff, librarians and students.

“This year’s award recipients join the ranks of our past honourees, building on a great tradition of extraordinary dedication to the university and to society as a whole,” President Meric Gertler said in his address to the winners. “They represent the incredible breadth and depth of excellence found across the university and they are an inspiration to us all.

The UUֱ�� Scarborough’s Indigenous House, a building that will be dedicated to learning about Indigenous culture and ways of knowing, has received a 2023 Award of Merit from Canadian Architect.

The award is given to architectural projects that bring innovation to the world of design and balance aesthetics with the effectiveness of social spaces.

Indigenous House was designed by Alfred Waugh, principal architect at Formline Architecture and a member of the Fond du Lac Denesuline Nation of Saskatchewan, along with LGA Architecture Partners. Waugh drew inspiration for the design from a traditional winter wigwam and longhouse, and also took into account suggestions of local Indigenous communities, elders and knowledge keepers.

Claire Weisz, a juror for the award, says the committee looked at many projects designed to serve Indigenous people. “Finding an appropriate and functional architectural expression was not always successful,” Weisz said. “In this case, it is: a new form of architecture consciously emerges from the landscape and looks to Indigenous precedents.”

Marc Couture, director, sustainability and energy management, at the UUֱ��’s Sustainability Office, is one of Canada’s Clean16 Award recipients and a Clean50 honouree.

For more than a decade, the Clean50 Awards have recognized 50 Canadian sustainability leaders who facilitate understanding, collaboration and innovation in the fight to limit global warming to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels. The leader in each category receives the Clean16 award.  Last year, UUֱ��'s Ron Saporta was recognized with the award.

Couture was recognized for his leadership in developing the climate positive campus strategy for the St. George campus and implementing a tri-campus sustainability performance standard.

“Through Marc’s leadership and technical expertise, the university is undertaking a radical transformation of its nearly 200-year-old campus,” says Luke Barber, acting chief operating officer, property services and sustainability at UUֱ��’s Facilities & Services. “This means setting a goal of moving the campus beyond net-zero to climate positive by eliminating more carbon than it produces.”

The industry-leading tri-campus sustainability performance standard aims to hold UUֱ��’s $5-billion capital program and $40 million per year in infrastructure projects to the strictest energy and carbon standards in the country, Barber says, adding this standard has already been applied to over 80 capital projects totaling more than $3 billion in value. This has resulted in energy and carbon designs that have already helped UUֱ�� avoid an incremental 8,500 tonnes of carbon annually.

Mark Bennett, a graphic designer in the UUֱ�� Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s office of communications, has received the inaugural Type Directors Club (TDC) Ezhishin Scholarship.

Named after the Ojibwe word for “s/he leaves a mark,” the annual $5,000 scholarship was established by the TDC and Google and recognizes “First Nation and Native American people in Canada and the U.S. who exemplify a creative practice that explores typography, type design or relevant linguistic work.”

The designer/art director for Temerty Medicine’s award-winning alumni magazine, UofTMed, Bennett is also a part-time architectural studies student at UUֱ��'s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design. He has explored typography for several years, and his work was featured most recently in the Inuit Art Quarterly. He also contributed to the new typeface and visual identity of the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq.

Bennett was presented with the scholarship at the TDC ASCENDERS event in New York City on September 7.

The UUֱ�� has been recognized by Forbes as one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity 2023.

Forbes and Statista selected Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity based on independent surveys of more than 12,000 employees working part-time or full-time for companies employing at least 500 people in Canada. Companies were also assessed on gender diversity among their top executives and/or board members, and indicators such as tangible diversity-related initiatives, resource groups for employees, and proactive communication of diversity. The recipients were announced on July 11.

“Being named one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity speaks to the deep commitment and hard work of faculty members, librarians, and staff across the UUֱ��,” said Kelly Hannah-Moffat, vice-president, People Strategy, Equity & Culture. “Our shared efforts to foster a culture of belonging at UUֱ�� are making a significant impact, and we will continue to build on this progress as we work to embed equity, diversity, and inclusion into all aspects of life at the university.”

The UUֱ�� has recognized staff and librarians from across its three campuses with the inaugural Exemplary UUֱ�� Ambassador Awards (EUTA).

Eighteen individual and six team recipients were honoured at a presentation ceremony held recently at Desautels Hall.

Established in 2022, the EUTA Award recognizes the contributions and achievements of librarians and staff, as individuals or in teams, who have furthered the strategic priorities of their unit, department, faculty, or division, and made a significant, positive impact on the university.

"The recipients have set an extremely high bar for future candidates,” President Meric Gertler said. “On behalf of the UUֱ��, and your many friends and colleagues in our community, thank you for your excellent – and innovative – service and remarkable dedication to the UUֱ��.

“You are a wonderful inspiration for all of us to continue working together to make the UUֱ�� a better place."

For the tenth year, the UUֱ�� has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers.

Mediacorp Canada's Canada's Top 100 Employers project recognizes employers who are leaders in developing exceptional sustainability initiatives that commit to reducing the organization's environmental footprint and create a more sustainable future.

UUֱ�� was recognized as a leader in sustainable building design, food services, transportation initiatives, waste reduction and community partnerships. Examples include the new Green Roof Innovation Testing Laboratory, the UTSC farmers' market, the Climate Positive Plan and UUֱ�� Mississauga Sustainability Strategic Plan, the construction of Canada’s largest urban geo-exchange system – and the work of the sustainability offices at UUֱ�� Mississauga, the St. George campus and UUֱ�� Scarborough to embed sustainability into the fabric of university operations and the on-campus experience.

“This award highlights what our institution and our tri-campus community do best – embracing research, innovation, and new technologies that have immediate impact but also long-term benefits for future members of our community," said Heather Boon, acting vice-president, people strategy, equity and culture. Don MacMillan, former registrar with the UUֱ��’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, has been recognized with the OURA Award of Achievement by the Ontario University Registrars’ Association.

The award honours long-standing members who have made significant contributions by participating through active membership on the executive, standing committees and workshops, and actively enhancing and developing academic administration within the Ontario university system. 

As a member of OURA, MacMillan was involved in supporting the liaison community’s dialogue conference at UUֱ�� Scarborough. As chair of the Initial OISE Teacher Education Admission Committee, MacMillan advocated strongly to eliminate barriers for students not well represented in the teaching ranks. During his time at UUֱ��, he co-founded the innovative UTSC Green Path program, bringing hundreds of excellent students from China to UUֱ�� Scarborough. MacMillan also advocated for the highest possible level of service to students using technology, staff development, and reducing unnecessary bureaucracy.

“Don is an exceptional colleague who advocates for and strives to enhance the student experience,” University Registrar Angelique Saweczko says. “Through his efforts in establishing recruitment partnerships and implementing system enhancements, Don's contributions to the university and student success are immeasurable.

“It is with great honor that we celebrate Don's recognition from OURA, and I feel privileged to have worked alongside him.”

MacMillan began his career at UUֱ�� as the campus registrar and director of enrolment for UUֱ�� Scarborough from 1998 to 2009, then served as the faculty registrar at OISE from 2009 to 2013, the director of student services in the school of graduate studies from 2013 to 2015, and as the faculty registrar, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering from 2015 to December 2022, when he retired.
