Kent Moore, vice-principal, research at the UUֱ�� Mississauga and Distinguished Professor of Theoretical Geophysics of Climate Change in the department of chemical and physical sciences, has been awarded a Patterson Distinguished Service Medal by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The prestigious award was created in 1946 in honour of meteorologist and UUֱ�� alum Dr. John Patterson and recognizes outstanding contributions to meteorology in Canada.

Moore is renowned for his climate research in the Arctic and mountainous regions. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, received over 65 national and international grants and awards and given numerous media interviews on his research and issues related to climate change.

“I’m incredibly honoured,” said Moore, who is praised by peers for his collaborative nature, empathetic leadership and creative approach to research. “To join the ranks of Canada’s leaders in meteorology who have received this award before me — it means a great deal.”

“It’s also a testament to the contributions of the many students, fellows, and colleagues I’ve worked with over the years. It’s been a privilege to collaborate with such generous and committed scientists.”

“Professor Moore’s research program has transformed our understanding of the impacts of climate change in polar and mountainous regions,” said W. Richard Peltier, a University Professor in the department of physics at the Faculty of Arts & Science who nominated Moore for the award. “His highly interdisciplinary and internationally recognized body of knowledge has fostered excellence in climate science, contributing to Canada’s global leadership in the field.”

Moore received his Patterson Medal in a ceremony at the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Congress this June.

Five faculty members at the UUֱ�� have been recognized with 2023-24 Cheryl Regehr Early Career Teaching Awards.

The annual awards are given to faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to student learning, pedagogical engagement and teaching innovation.

They are named for Cheryl Regehr, a professor in the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and a champion of teaching excellence and innovation who served as UUֱ��’s vice-president and provost for a decade.

The UUֱ�� has announced the winners of the 2024 Awards of Excellence, a prestigious program presented annually in collaboration with the UUֱ�� Alumni Association (UTAA) to recognize outstanding and inspiring faculty, staff, librarians and students.

Seven students from across the UUֱ�� are recipients of the 2023-2024 Inlight Research Fellowships awarded by Inlight Student Mental Health Research, a UUֱ�� institutional strategic initiative committed to improving student mental health and wellness outcomes.

The $10,000 fellowships support graduate scholars who are leading research projects that aim to improve student mental health and well-being on campus and recognize the importance of student-led and co-designed research solutions.

“The Inlight Research Fellowship Program is dedicated to promoting the development of leaders in post-secondary student mental health research,” said Julius Haag, Inlight’s associate director, education and training and an assistant professor, teaching stream in the department of sociology at UUֱ�� Mississauga.

“We are actively supporting impactful research that will grow the perspectives and capacity needed to advance student mental health and wellness, as well as centring research that focuses on engaging the experiences and perspectives of our diverse student community.”

David Yee, a playwright who teaches at the UUֱ�� Mississauga, has won the prestigious Siminovitch Prize, Canada’s highest valued theatre award.

The lucrative prize is awarded annually to a mid-career professional artist whose groundbreaking work significantly contributes to advancing the art form. It is named after playwright Elinore Siminovitch and University Professor Emeritus Lou Siminovitch.

The Siminovitch laureate receives $75,000 and the opportunity to select an up-and-coming artist to receive a $25,000 protégé prize. Yee, co-founding artistic director of fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company, selected Julie Phan, Toronto writer-performer and arts leader.

“I tell my students that there will come a time in the process of creating a play where you must relinquish control to the play itself – when the play will start to tell you what it wants to be,” Yee said in his acceptance speech. “This is what writing has taught me: how to listen to something greater than myself. Not just as a way to create, but as a way to live in the world.”

Yee, who studied theatre and drama studies at UUֱ�� Mississauga and teaches playwriting at the university, won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama in 2015.

In 2021, he produced an audio drama about the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, featuring fourth-year students from the Theatre and Drama Studies program offered jointly by UUֱ�� Mississauga and Sheridan College.

Alicia Hawkins, an associate professor in the department of anthropology at UUֱ�� Mississauga and collaborators at the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation and the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation (OCF) have received a Connaught Community Partnership Research Program award for their project exploring the cataloguing and reclamation of archaeological artifacts.

Historically, archaeology in Ontario has been an extractive practice that failed to include Indigenous communities. From the 1960s to 1980s, teams of archaeologists excavated at the La Cloche site on the north shore of Lake Huron – but the work was unpublished for decades.

More than 40 boxes of artifacts are now in the care of the OCF. However, the lack of publication and comprehensive reporting of the excavations pose challenges for the OCF and Sagamok Anishnawbek, on whose lands the site is located.

To address this, Hawkins and her partners will bring together a multigenerational team of Indigenous Peoples to catalogue and interpret the artifacts. The collaboration will guide the planning and decision-making process for the site and its collections.

The Connaught Community Partnership Research Program aims to help create and nurture partnerships between UUֱ�� scholars and community partners that support community-driven research.

Hawkins is one of four UUֱ�� scholars to receive awards from the program this year. The others are Amaya Perez-Brumer at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Ishtiaque Ahmed in the Faculty of Arts & Science and Jaris Swidrovich at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy.

Nineteen researchers at the UUֱ�� and partner hospitals have received support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) through its Innovation Fund.

The Innovation Fund aims to support Canadian post-secondary institutions, research hospitals and non-profit research institutions in acquiring and developing infrastructure to boost their research capacity and foster world-class research.

Experts at UUֱ�� and partner hospitals were awarded close to $60 million in support of infrastructure needs in research areas ranging from neurodegenerative disease diagnostics and genome sequencing to extreme mechanics and next-generation telescopes.

Additionally, four projects involving UUֱ�� experts and led by other universities were awarded around $2.9 million.

“Our government is proud to support future generations by enabling students and post-doctoral researchers to acquire and hone the skills and knowledge they need to excel in their challenging fields,” said François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s minister of innovation, science and industry. “Their pioneering research will further establish Canada’s position as a global leader in innovation while helping to drive our economy and achieve our shared vision of a brighter, healthier future for all Canadians.”

CFI president and CEO Roseann O’Reilly Runte added that research labs and facilities “provide the foundation upon which Canada’s research leaders can make discoveries and drive innovation that will contribute to a better future for all of us.”

Twenty faculty members from the UUֱ�� have been awarded Canada Research Chairs in support of their research in areas ranging from LGBTQ2S+ youth mental health to quantum photonic technologies and sustainable suburban housing.

Awarded by the Government of Canada, Canada Research Chair positions are designed to reinforce academic research and training excellence with a view to improving depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthening Canada’s international competitiveness and helping train the next generation of highly skilled people.

Ten researchers from across the UUֱ�� have been awarded the Black Research Network's IGNITE grant.

Launched in 2022, the IGNITE grant provides annual small-scale funding to support interdisciplinary research led by Black faculty, librarians, post-doctoral scholars, clinical scientists and medical research fellows and residents.

The grant offers between $5,000 and $10,000 towards professional development, research dissemination and other types of research support.

Research projects include preserving traditional recipes in the GTA’s African diaspora, literature and media studies and human rights. Various projects advance and advocate for Black health, including disability studies and equity practices in public health.

The UUֱ�� has presented the 2023 Arbor Awards to 92 dedicated volunteers in recognition of their exceptional and sustained contributions to the university.

Created more than 30 years ago, the Arbor Award is the highest honour granted by UUֱ�� to volunteers. This year’s recipients have significantly impacted virtually every aspect of life at the university, ranging from academic programming and experiential learning to governance and mentorship.

“Our success is due in no small measure to the excellence of our alumni and friends, whose dedication is exemplified by our Arbor Award winners, past and present,” said President Meric Gertler at a ceremony honouring award recipients on Jan. 16.

The celebration marked the first in-person Arbor Awards ceremony since 2019, before the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions. Award winners from 2020, 2021 and 2022 were also invited so they could be thanked face-to-face for their service.

David Palmer, UUֱ��'s vice-president of advancement, said Arbor Award recipients exemplified the importance of volunteerism to UUֱ��’s mission and commitment to inclusive excellence. “That’s why, for the first time ever in a UUֱ�� campaign, we have included alumni engagement as a primary goal for Defy Gravity alongside our fundraising goals,” Palmer said. “We are exceptionally grateful to all nominees, past and present, for their tremendous contributions that have elevated every aspect of life at UUֱ��.”
