alumnus Richard Rooney, which will be matched by funds from the Faculty of Arts & Science, will create an endowed professorship at each centre and two prestigious postdoctoral fellowships, energizing the next generation of African Studies and Caribbean Studies scholars.

“We are deeply grateful to Richard Rooney for his visionary gift to the UUֱ,” said UUֱ President Meric Gertler. “This landmark benefaction will further advance UUֱ’s leadership in African Studies and Caribbean Studies.”

Melanie Woodin, dean of UUֱ’s Faculty of Arts & Science, said the gift will elevate the centres to new heights as sites of scholarly excellence and transdisciplinary dialogue.

“The research, teaching and collaboration happening at these two centres are indispensable for making sense of the 21st century, providing learners with the tools they need to become engaged citizens, anchored by a rich understanding of the world today,” Woodin said.

Recognized as one of the best undergraduate programs of its kind in North America, the African Studies Centre is a vibrant social and cultural hub of academic excellence, helping students develop a deeper understanding of African societies, cultures and histories through an interdisciplinary lens.

The Centre for Caribbean Studies, meanwhile, brings together academics and learners with shared commitments to Caribbean Studies as an area of interdisciplinary focus for research, teaching, learning and community engagement – and offers the only program in Canada with degrees specifically dedicated to the study of the Caribbean and its people.

Both programs originated at New College, where long-time supporter and volunteer Rooney studied while earning his bachelor of arts degree in 1977.

“The education I received at New College was a springboard for my success,” said Rooney, who is vice-chair and co-founder of Burgundy Asset Management Ltd. “It’s an honour for me to be able to give back to a place that was so pivotal in my life and to support academic programs that can help us imagine a more equitable and just society.”

<a SAMIH itself has received funding as part of the Government of Ontario’s plan to increase the number of health-care workers in the province.

“We are so grateful for the gift from the Orlando Corporation and the investment by the Ford Government, which have led us to this exciting day,” said UUֱ President Meric Gertler. “This state-of-the-art building will enable UUֱ to cultivate a bold new generation of health leaders who reflect the communities they serve.”

“We expect that the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health will attract many local students from Scarborough and the Eastern GTA,” said Wisdom Tettey, UUֱ vice-president and principal of UUֱ Scarborough. “These talented individuals will play an important role in meeting the health-care needs of under-served communities and helping to advance health equity.”

The purpose-built, five-storey building will occupy 144, 482 square feet and sit at the corner of Military Trail and Morningside Avenue – a prominent gateway to UUֱ Scarborough, directly across from the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

“This vibrant new hub for health education in Scarborough is critical to increasing access to health care,” said Patricia Houston, interim dean of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and interim vice-provost, relations with health-care institutions. “It will help provide equitable, integrated and compassionate care in the Eastern GTA – and, ultimately, it will help improve lives across the region.”

To support the vision for this new academy, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and UUֱ’s Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing will expand their training to UUֱ Scarborough. Building on the university’s history of educating tens of thousands of health professionals – a legacy that extends back over a century – SAMIH will graduate approximately 40 physicians, approximately 60 physician assistants, 30 nurse practitioners and 40 physical therapists per year. More than 300 new health sciences students will join UUֱ Scarborough’s campus, further strengthening SAMIH as a key hub for health education in the Eastern GTA. The newly revamped health sciences undergraduate program offers unique placement opportunities and paid co-ops, enabling students to learn in a close-knit campus setting.

This new generation of health-care professionals will help fill a serious gap, with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care having identified Scarborough as an area in high need of physicians. The shortage includes family doctors, as well as other specialists such as child and adult psychiatrists, geriatricians, nurse practitioners and emergency medical physicians.

“Our government is proud to support this historic medical school expansion,” said Premier Doug Ford. “The Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health will build on the investments we’re making to help ensure Scarborough and the Durham Region have the health care workers they need now and into the future.”

The impact on the region will be significant. Projected to open in September 2026, the building will include a clinical psychology clinic; a pharmacy clinic (Discovery Pharmacy) led by faculty and students from UUֱ’s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy; and clinical settings in which nurse practitioner students, under supervision, can provide direct care to the community. The building will also feature an anatomy lab for medical students, two large technology-enhanced active learning (TEAL) classrooms, a 21-bed clinical skills lab and 10 case-based learning instructional labs.

“A dynamic learning space can make all the difference in education – especially when attracting the best and brightest students,” said Anna Kennedy, chair of UUֱ’s Governing Council. “This building is an example of one such space. We anticipate that many of the students who will fill its hallways will go on to become some of the region’s top health-care professionals.”

Construction began on the site in early fall 2023, with a ground blessing conducted by UUֱ Scarborough’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives in October. Excavation is anticipated to start in January 2024. The project team includes the construction services company EllisDon and the architecture firms Diamond Schmitt and MVRDV.

The Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health will strengthen connections across numerous hospitals and networks. Its partners will include the Scarborough Health Network, Michael Garron Hospital, Lakeridge Health and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. UUֱ will build upon existing relationships with local community partners to develop new research and teaching opportunities.

This dynamic hub will bring UUֱ’s nurse practitioner program to the region. The program is highly sought after for its approach to providing personalized, holistic and high-quality health care to clients and patients across their lifespans.

“This incredible building will help foster a vital pipeline for nurse practitioners,” said Linda Johnston, dean of the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. “Nurse practitioners play a critical role in the health of communities, and future graduates of the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health have the potential to make a huge difference in the lives of people in Scarborough and the Eastern GTA.”

Similarly, the Discovery Pharmacy at SAMIH will provide pharmacy services and interprofessional experiential learning opportunities for students in the Doctor of Pharmacy program. It will also help enhance connections with practising pharmacists in health networks in the surrounding area.

“As the scope of practice for pharmacists in Ontario continues to expand, finding new ways to collaborate across health professions is central to redefining health education and how we deliver health care” said Lisa Dolovich, dean of Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy.

The new building is poised to bring enormous benefits to the region. In addition to enabling the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health to meet the health-care professional shortage by creating a pool of talented graduates, the new facility will help drive innovation and economic growth.

“The Orlando Corporation’s benefaction stands as a model for visionary philanthropy,” said David Palmer, UUֱ’s vice-president of advancement. “It’s a beacon of extraordinary generosity with the potential to inspire other transformative investments in Scarborough and the Eastern GTA.”

News home page banner

Off

Mon, 06 Nov 2023 19:23:00 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 304263 at Black History Month Luncheon to celebrate Black excellence, community and great food /news/black-history-month-luncheon-celebrate-black-excellence-community-and-great-food Black History Month Luncheon to celebrate Black excellence, community and great food

mattimar Thu, 02/23/2023 - 09:22

Cutline

The highly anticipated UUֱ Black History Month Luncheon returns as an in-person event on Feb. 24 inside Hart House's Great Hall (photo by Johnny Guatto)

Mariam Matti

Topic

City & Culture

Black History Month

Division of University Advancement

Hart House

The UUֱ’s Black History Month Luncheon is all about Black excellence, great food and celebrating community – themes that are front-and-centre this year as the event returns in-person.

After two years of virtual celebrations due to the pandemic, the 2023 edition of the annual luncheon will be held Feb. 24 inside Hart House’s Great Hall and will feature keynote speaker Cameron Bailey, CEO of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Glen Boothe, who works for UUֱ’s division of advancement and is the co-founder of the luncheon, says he is looking forward to bringing the community together again.

“We’ve missed that sense of camaraderie,” says Boothe. “The past couple of years have been really challenging for all of us. Initially I worked in the mailroom. Before that, I owned a restaurant.

The mailroom was next to the lunchroom, which was kind of like the hub of DUA, and all kinds of people would come down to share lunch. The idea for the lunch pretty much came organically, from a combination of my food background and the fact that staff shared food and stories over lunch.

When I brought up the idea of a lunch for Black History Month for the wider community, it was met with unanimous approval.

The spirit of community and inclusiveness was there from the start – which, looking back, is one of the things I’m most happy about.

Who helped launch this event with you?

Brenda Registe, who worked in alumni relations, and Maria Constantino, in divisional services, were among the co-founders.

How did it become one of the biggest events on UUֱ’s Black History Month calendar?

It was organic growth, to be honest with you. It definitely got bigger as we were able to get higher profile speakers. That’s when it gathered momentum. Every year, it’s a challenge to match the speaker from last year. This year it’s De Grasse – so that will be a hard one to top.

DUA shared office space with the department of public affairs (now UUֱ Communications) and they also helped us get the word out to the broader community. It was a perfect fit in terms of promoting it.

Were guest speakers always a part of the event?

There was always an educational part, but the event was positioned as a celebration. That’s why it’s usually on the last Friday of the month – as a celebration to cap off all the other events, including the seminars, symposiums that came before.

What do you look for in a guest speaker?

There’s always a debate within the organizing committee about who we should go for. Do we go for the big name or the community leader who’s having a big impact but doesn’t necessarily get much recognition? At the end of the day, they have to be accomplished and excellent in their chosen field, but they also have to show some community involvement and work to benefit the community.

You've said you started this event to fill a gap in the university's calendar of events for Black History Month at the time. What was the missing piece?

When I started working for UUֱ around 1998, it was only a few years after Canada officially recognized Black History Month. Jean Augustine, the MP who moved to recognize Black History Month in the House of Commons, later became one of our guest speakers.

At UUֱ, there was no real recognition of Black History Month per se – nothing very visible, at least. That was one of the main reasons for the luncheon. We wanted to bring this to the wider public. We were always thinking of non-Blacks and how to get them exposed to Black culture in a fun way – or at all, really.

You have said that the food is typically “the star of the show.” What kind of food is served at the luncheon in a normal year and why is it important?

We have all kinds of Black food, as it were. I was always conscious of Black food not just being Caribbean food – because we’re so Caribbean-centered in Toronto. Many of us have Caribbean heritage, right?

So, I deliberately wanted to include African food and searched for people I knew with an African background. We were all volunteers to begin with. I asked East African people I knew to bring food in and I asked West African people. If I met a South American person, I asked them to bring food that Black people eat there. It was to expose people to different parts of the experience through their taste buds.

What were some of your favourite dishes over the years?

An East African flatbread called injera. People are also fond of my jerk chicken with home-made seasonings.

Who were the most memorable speakers?

I never know how to answer that question. It’s always like the last one was my favourite. I just remember how impactful Kimberly Davis [NHL Senior Executive Vice President, Social Impact, Growth Initiatives & Legislative Affairs] was last year.

It was the fact that she was a Black woman executive at the highest level of the NHL, and the fact that she spoke so eloquently about the role of hockey in Canadian society.

Honestly, I’m not trying to dodge the question but they have all been impactful in their own way, from Masai Ujiri to Jean Augustine, in 2013. They’ve all been excellent at what they do and in helping the community.

What kind of impact do you think the luncheon has had at the university?

In general, I think it’s meaningful that the luncheon now has a fairly high visibility across the university. When I talk to people in different departments, they say, ‘Hey, that’s the highlight of my year.’ Months before the event happens, people ask me when it is and who the speaker will be.

The luncheon has increased the visibility of Black culture and excellence at the university and beyond.

How do you see the event evolving over the next two decades?

That’s an interesting question. I think the luncheon foreshadowed the zeitgeist today. The prevailing values we started with in terms of inclusivity and inclusiveness, identity awareness and acceptance – those ideas are a bigger part of the climate today. It’s like the rest of the world has caught up. Looking forward, I hope the luncheon continues to help grow those values – and grows with those values.

News home page banner

Off

Fri, 25 Feb 2022 16:12:23 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 173032 at ‘A message of hope, optimism and humanity’: UUֱ’s Defy Gravity brand to showcase the university to the world /news/message-hope-optimism-and-humanity-u-t-s-defy-gravity-brand-showcase-university-world ‘A message of hope, optimism and humanity’: UUֱ’s Defy Gravity brand to showcase the university to the world

Christopher.Sorensen Thu, 02/10/2022 - 11:32

Cutline

The Defy Gravity brand will showcase how UUֱ brings together top minds in every discipline, background and perspective in one of the world’s most diverse urban regions – and gives them the platform to achieve incredible things (photo by Neil Ta)

Rahul Kalvapalle

Topic

Our Community

David Palmer

Defy Gravity Brand

David Estok

Diversity and Inclusion

Alumni

Division of University Advancement

Equity

Global

Marketing

Meric Gertler

Research and Innovation

Climate change. We spent several months consulting with students, faculty, staff, alumni and other key internal and external stakeholders to capture insights on what made UUֱ unique and compelling.

The responses were remarkably consistent. They were proud that UUֱ is one of the few universities worldwide that’s not only excellent in so many fields but also accessible to students from every background. They were also proud of our record of discovery, innovation and impact and our insatiable drive to take on complex problems. And they highlighted our ongoing efforts to build more supportive and inclusive environments for students, faculty and staff across our three campuses. It describes a community of problem-solvers that sees the impossible as a dare and are willing to defy all obstacles and expectations to solve problems and accomplish great things.

We think it’s an ideal way to express our values, character, mettle and collaborative DNA. This presents a challenge for brand development because you have to come up with something that captures the aspirations and strengths of so many distinct faculties, colleges, divisions and communities. It’s hard to get it right.

How will the Defy Gravity brand support the work of the UUֱ community now and in the future?

Estok: Telling a consistent and powerful brand story about UUֱ will benefit everyone. It will help our target audiences internalize why we exist and why we matter, and give them reasons to care about our work. It will help our faculties and divisions craft messages and marketing materials that help them recruit the best talent, attract funding, engage alumni and spark partnerships and collaborations with other top institutions.

Kreinin: Our goal with Defy Gravity is to create a unified voice for our institution. But for us, unity is not the same thing as conformity. We know that UUֱ has many distinct communities and they all defy gravity in their own way. We strongly believe that our communities need to tell their stories in their voice. What a strong, central brand offers is a way to connect this storytelling to a much larger story about the institution. It allows people to tell their stories in a way that enriches the university as a whole.

How are the challenges posed by the pandemic – and the UUֱ community’s response to them – reflected in Defy Gravity?

Estok: It’s difficult to overstate how challenging the last couple of years have been for so many people in our community and beyond. But the way people have risen to the challenge is truly inspiring. Our experts have worked tirelessly to lead us through this crisis. Our students and faculty have adapted to new ways of teaching and learning with unflagging creativity and ingenuity. To see how well our community has responded to the pandemic gives me hope for the future. Obviously, this reality was on our minds constantly as we developed the brand – and Defy Gravity is a testament to that hope and optimism.

Kreinin: The pandemic revealed just how resilient and indispensable our community could be during a time of crisis. This is a community that doesn't shrink from complexity or just accept the world as it is. We have a defiant streak. We're a community that wants to change the world for the better. We may not always succeed, but we don't let that hold us back. We use every setback as motivation to push onwards. We’ve seen this time and again during the pandemic. We’re a place where people come together to work on problems and overcome seemingly impossible challenges. This is a message that we think will resonate with people as we help our city and world recover from this pandemic.

What do you hope people ultimately take away from the Defy Gravity brand? What personally excites you about it?

Kreinin: As David said, it’s really a message of hope, optimism and humanity. And ultimately, we hope it will instill even greater pride in our community and inspire others to join us to take on the massive challenges we’re facing. I think what excites me the most is that it’s not a stodgy brand but one that’s incredibly human and emotional. It will allow us to tell so many great stories both locally and globally, individually and collectively.

Estok: I’d have to say it’s the storytelling that excites me the most, too. Stories not only about scholars revolutionizing their fields or trying to cure diseases, but students who are the first in their family to attend university and people who have overcome adversity, dug in their heels and kept going. These stories, featuring an incredibly diverse range of people and perspectives, are all around us at UUֱ and it’s an immense privilege to be able to help share them with the world.

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 10 Feb 2022 16:32:32 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 301100 at 'Food for thought': UUֱ's Black History Month Luncheon goes virtual, features NHL exec /news/food-thought-u-t-s-black-history-month-luncheon-goes-virtual-features-nhl-exec 'Food for thought': UUֱ's Black History Month Luncheon goes virtual, features NHL exec

Christopher.Sorensen Mon, 02/08/2021 - 10:56

Cutline

Co-founder Glen Boothe says a virtual format means there will be more time for discussion at this year's Black History Month Luncheon, which will feature senior NHL executive Kimberly Davis as a guest speaker (photo by Veronica Zaretski)

Geoffrey Vendeville

Topic

City & She also told the paper she isn’t shy about making her voice heard when it comes to issues of diversity.

“I was raised to be strong and to be fearless, so I’m not uncomfortable at being in a room of people that look different than me,” she said.

In addition to Davis, the luncheon will feature Tatyana Ali, known for her role as Will Smith’s cousin Ashley Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The hit syndicated show, which last aired in 1996 and received a second life through streaming services, remains popular with audiences, particularly youth, Boothe says.

“The Fresh Prince is iconic,” he says. “It was the story of a ghetto kid who makes it and that still resonates today.”

The luncheon’s organizers had to deviate from tradition this year as COVID-19 put a wrench in their plans. Typically, the event brings hundreds of people together over steaming plates of Afro-Caribbean cuisine, often including oxtail, curry goat, saltfish and Boothe’s signature jerk chicken and pork (the key, he says, is to maintain a balance of ingredients so neither the taste of cloves, nutmeg, garlic or peppers is overpowering).

While food is typically the “star of the show” at the Black History Luncheon, Boothe says he hopes the online format allows more time for discussion – leaving attendees with “food for thought.”

Boothe co-founded the luncheon with the help of his colleagues nearly two decades ago after he saw a blank space on the calendar during Black History Month.

Di Draganidis, who has worked with Boothe at UUֱ for 20 years, says she has volunteered to help with the event every year because she believes in its goal of bringing communities and cultures together.

“Being an ally should be more than just words,” she says. “All of us should find some practical and tangible way to show support for diversity and inclusion.”

What began as an office potluck has grown into UUֱ’s marquee February event, drawing big-name guests like Raptors President Masai Ujiri, poet George Elliott Clarke and Canada’s first Black woman MP and UUֱ alumna, Jean Augustine.

Event staff in the university’s advancement division and at Hart House are helping the organizers navigate the many logistical and technical challenges of hosting such a large online event.

“We’re really grateful for their help,” Boothe says. “This takes a village.”

With a movement for racial and social justice building momentum around the world, Boothe says the theme of the luncheon is more timely than ever.

“The idea of the lunch has always been to bring diverse cultures together, but what has happened this past summer has confirmed that this idea is so valid. It demonstrates that there is so much more work to be done to accomplish that cohesion that we’re aiming for,” he says.

“It confirms that we’re on the right track.”

Inset photos courtesy of NHL and by Leon Bennet via Getty Images

News home page banner

Off

Mon, 08 Feb 2021 15:56:38 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 168342 at ‘Exceptional role models’: African Scholars Awards recognize contributions to university and society /news/exceptional-role-models-african-scholars-awards-recognize-contributions-university-and-society ‘Exceptional role models’: African Scholars Awards recognize contributions to university and society

rahul.kalvapalle Tue, 02/02/2021 - 11:33

Cutline

Left to right, from top: Michel Chikwanine, Antoinette Handley, Eddie Jjumba, Karima Hashmani; Tshweu Moleme, Sulaiman Jalloh, Mercy Lillian Gichuki, Jeffrey Fasegha; Seggane Musisi, Ismail Kibirige, Entisar Yusuf and Rachel Samuel.

Rahul Kalvapalle

Topic

Global Lens

David Palmer

African Scholars Awards

Alumni

Division of University Advancement

Faculty of Arts & Science

Global

Ontario Institute for Studies in Education

UUֱ Mississauga

As a child growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Michel Chikwanine endured unspeakable horrors of war. He witnessed the torture of his father – a human rights lawyer who was eventually murdered due to his political beliefs – and the rape of his mother. He was forced to become a child soldier at age five and a refugee at age 11.

Yet, Chikwanine retains hope for the future and a belief in positive change. He’s an activist, motivational speaker and leadership facilitator with organizations ranging from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative.

His inspiring journey and his tireless advocacy for peace and human rights were recently recognized with a Global Impact Award presented by the UUֱ African Alumni Association during its annual African Scholars Awards ceremony. For Chikwanine, who earned a bachelor of arts specialist degree in African studies from UUֱ and co-authored a graphic novel, Child Soldier: When Boys and Girls Are Used in War, the award served as motivation to continue to work towards the betterment of society.

“As my father always said before he died – he always reminded me that great men and great women throughout history have never been praised for their money or their success, but rather for their heart and what they do for others,” Chikwanine said during the virtual event last last week.

“So I ask all of us – alumni and every part of this community – to be great, with great hearts to make this incredible life and incredible continent that we have be the best that it can be.”

Michel Chikwanine, an activist, motivational speaker and leadership facilitator, was recognized with a Global Impact Award.

Created by a group led by Henry Ssali, the founder and executive director of the African Alumni Association, the African Scholars Awards ceremony saw 16 UUֱ alumni, faculty and staff recognized for their contributions in realms ranging from academic achievement and social innovation to community development and volunteering. The recipients included Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, an assistant professor of sociology at UUֱ Mississauga, Associate Professor Antoinette Handley, chair of the department of political science in the Faculty of Arts & Science, and Karima Hashmani, UUֱ's executive director of equity, diversity and inclusion.

Recent graduates Entisar Yusuf, who founded the Black Graduate Students Association, and Jeffrey Fasegha, who was recently named a Rhodes Scholar, were also recognized (see the full list of recipients below).

David Palmer, UUֱ’s vice-president, advancement, hailed the award recipients as “exceptional role models” who serve as examples for the current cohort of UUֱ students.

“I’m always delighted in my role to acknowledge outstanding alumni, especially after reading the biographies of this year’s recipients. I can tell that you are all making a positive difference through your professional excellence, academic achievements and your volunteer contributions to your communities,” Palmer said.

Palmer highlighted the success of initiatives such as the Lester B. Pearson Scholarships and MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program in helping attract and support outstanding students from African countries. He noted that UUֱ has welcomed 21 outstanding students from African countries in the four years since the Pearson Scholarships were launched.

“The university itself has a strong commitment to supporting African students and programs, increasing its ties with African universities and expanding the number of international students from Africa,” he said.

David Palmer (top row, far left), UUֱ’s vice-president, advancement, and Henry Ssali (top row, second from left), who works in the president’s office and is the founder and executive director of the African Alumni Association, are joined by recipients of this year’s African Scholars Awards (image via Zoom)

Rachel Samuel is one such example. She came to UUֱ from Malawi – where she grew up in a refugee camp – as part of the World University Service of Canada Student Refugee Program. She went on to receive a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship on her way to earning a bachelor of science degree in human biology and anthropology. She later graduated with a master of public health from Queen’s University.

Samuel, who is currently working on a research project on refugee health and mental health at York University, was one of four recipients of the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award.

“My passion for saving refugee populations really stems from my childhood, so I’m very humbled and happy to be a part of this team that is inspiring and motivated to make a difference,” said Samuel, who is originally from Rwanda.

“To me, this award is an indication that we are all destined to do great things in our communities and society at large, despite our circumstances. This causes me to reflect on my journey and really understand that my thoughts and dreams should never be limited by my circumstances.”

Rachel Samuel, who grew up in a refugee camp in Malawi, earned a bachelor of science degree from UUֱ and is now working on a research project on refugee health and mental health at York University. His areas of specialization include the impact of war and conflict on mental health, HIV/AIDS, mental health of orphans and vulnerable children, dementia and traditional mental health care in Africa.

“I’m honoured to receive this award and to be amongst so many distinguished people and friends of mine,” said Musisi, a professor of psychiatry at Makerere University College of Health Sciences and senior consultant psychiatrist at the Mulago National Referral and Teaching Hospital and Uganda Ministry of Health in Kampala.

“I don’t know what to say, except to encourage – especially young Africans – to continue working and impacting not only where you are, but more specifically Africa, so that we don’t keep lagging behind despite the many resources and talent that we have on this continent.

“I believe the problems we have in Africa are solvable if only we dedicate ourselves to their solutions. Wherever you are in the diaspora or on the continent, always make sure you give something to better the continent.”

Musisi also thanked UUֱ for supporting his training in psychiatry and enabling him to “use that knowledge to impact mental health care in Canada, later in Uganda and elsewhere in Africa.”

Here is the complete list of recipients of the 2020 African Scholars Awards:

Community Development Award – Rev. Eddie Jjumba, Tshweu Moleme

Outstanding Recent Alumni Award – Rachel Samuel, Entisar Yusuf, Jeffrey Fasegha, Sulaiman Jalloh

Social Innovation Award – Ismail Kibirige

Global Impact Award – Michel Chikwanine, Seggane Musisi

Emerging Academic Award – Mercy Lillian Gichuki, Morris Komakech

Distinguished Volunteer Award – Joan Kasozi, Ayaan Abdulle

Influencers’ Award – Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, Antoinette Handley, Karima Hashmani

News home page banner

Off

Tue, 02 Feb 2021 16:33:45 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 168256 at
