The medal is named after Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace who independently developed the theory of evolution by natural selection.

鈥淚鈥檓 quite chuffed and delighted. It鈥檚 an honour,鈥 says Barrett, in the Faculty of Arts & Science鈥檚 (EEB). 鈥淚鈥檓 a great admirer of both Darwin and Wallace 鈥 What鈥檚 more, I鈥檓 delighted to receive the honour because recipients of the medal have predominantly been zoologists.

鈥淣ot many botanists have received it.鈥

A leading authority on the reproductive biology and genetics of flowering plants, Barrett is also an internationally recognized expert on the ecology and genetics of plant invasions and the environmental consequences of genetically modified crops.

鈥淪pencer Barrett鈥檚 research group has made wide-ranging contributions to our understanding of plant reproduction, spanning ecology and evolution to genetics and genomics,鈥 says , EEB chair.

The medal recognizes Barrett鈥檚 teaching and mentorship as well as his research. From 1990 to 2018, Barrett taught the award-winning introductory biology course, , introducing tens of thousands of first-year students 鈥 including Wright who now teaches it 鈥 to evolutionary biology.

鈥淲e taught the students about the story of evolution and life on Earth and about Darwin and Wallace,鈥 says Barrett. 鈥淚鈥檓 honoured to receive a medal bearing their names.鈥
